Hunter91 Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Its been about 3-4 yrs ago but at this time of year I caught a ton of good crappie up to 14 inches out there. Most of them on swimming minnows or live minnows near where the old pump platform was near the bluff. There were several brushpiles in there. i dont know if the MDC put them in there or they just floated in there when there was high water. They were right on a drop off from shallow ater to deeper water. I haven't fished the lake as much as I use to but in the last year or two, I have only picked up one here and one there. Also there use to be a good brushpile near the railroad bridge that I could catch a few on.
Daveinozark Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 went out this morning around the boat house area. Noticed a lot of small frogs jumping around there. May need to break out the topwater there. only caught 1 crappie, but it was big
Daveinozark Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 anyone ever eat the crappie out of springfield lake?
Bassmaster21 Posted April 6, 2012 Author Posted April 6, 2012 I have never caught any crappie out of there but when we are low on fish in the freezer we eat the bass out of there and they are delicious so I'd eat them if I could catch the darn things haha.
Daveinozark Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 that one was fillet size, but it was the only one caught so I let it go. there was a lot of shad in that area the other day, but didn't see many fish jumping except for a few carp. the weeds are starting to grow in now too. I caught it on a 1/4 white booyah spinnerbait. That's my go too bait on Springfield lake. Tried a rattle trap, few wiggle warts, roadrunner, nothing except for a few misses. We'll see what the weather does
Justin Spencer Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 By the way, does anyone know if the MDC stocks the lake for them? I've not heard of a stocking, and I figured it wasn't a top priority, but Ive been pretty curious about that for a while. With crappie additional stockings are rarely needed as they tend to overpopulate rather easily. Wayne SW/MO Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 They also, like whites, tend to vary in size and numbers from year to year. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Bassmaster21 Posted April 7, 2012 Author Posted April 7, 2012 Thanka for the info on the weeds growing. Im glad to hear that. The fishing is about to get really good, well for the way i like to fish at least.
Members Bassmod Posted April 29, 2012 Members Posted April 29, 2012 I seen a Mdc shock report on Springfield lake and it actually has more crappie per acre than most lakes in Missouri one place good to try is where the river bends torwards the lake at the start of the bluff tandem tubes have worked great I've had a friend that's had several doubles like that
Bassmaster21 Posted May 1, 2012 Author Posted May 1, 2012 I had a friend go out last weekend and use roadrunners around those bluffs and catch ten crappie and a bass. I may have to try those sometime.
