JCWolfe Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 With the rain that was forecast and the oppotunity to go, we got to fish almost 4 hours before the blew the horn to release. Windy for sure. Did see some rising but not many bugs, I'm guessing the wind had something to do with that. I saw one mayfly come off the water. Fish were caught mainly on midges and micro jigs, a few were taken on a dry fly as well. My daughter also got her first fish on a march brown dry. It was her fourth time out fly fishing. I hope the lake and river doesn't get blown out but am thinking it is going to happen like last year so I hope you all got to fish this weekend because it will probably be a couple of months. Going to fish in the rain today at LMF. I'm hoping that place doesn't get destroyed like a couple of years ago because of all the rain. Definitely watching the water levels. Okiemountaineer
dgames Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I went last Wednesday afternoon and had the same experience as you, really bad wind, a few rising fish but nowhere near the insect activity of previous weeks, but still caught quite a few. Hopefully this storm won't be as bad as last April's storm. That one was crazy, almost 100,000 cfs on the Illinois for a day or so, raising Tenkiller something like 30 feet in a matter of days. To put that flow in perspective, the tailwater flow with the gates open was like 16000cfs as I recall. Right now, the flow at Tahlequah and above is only like 4500cfs or so. I know it will get higher, but hopefully not like last year's levels.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Quite a bit of water flowing into Tenkiller, bet it will be a while before we have wading conditions. But hopefully this won't be like last year and will only give the tailwater a good system flush. On the flip side, the higher water will hopefully get the stripers moving upstream. Last year sucked for stripers on the fly! I'm ready to stick another 20lber on the 8wt! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
Members FlyfishinOK Posted March 27, 2012 Members Posted March 27, 2012 Chance, Did you make it to the the LMF? I heard they were releasing lots of water on the lower? Hope they didn't blow out spilway creek again! We were on the UMF close to Arkansas from the 22nd to the 25th. Water was high until Saturday morning. We hit the Kiamichi on the 17th and the water was at 6.5 ft and moving along pretty good. On the 20th it was up to 32 ft...that's definatly blown out!
JCWolfe Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 They were releasing water from where they normally release, no flood gates were opened on spillway. Water was up on spillway and down to the water release point though. Fishing was tough that day. I landed two lost a few and had some fish rising to my dry. Saw Bwo's coming off the water and a few march browns. Black caddis came on pretty good when the rain stopped around 3 pm. Still enjoyed myself fishing in the rain, no one around. Okiemountaineer

Been spending most of my time in MO and AR in my drift boat. I need to get down there but never can make it happen. We have a fishing trip planned this weekend but we aren't sure where we are going just yet. Hoping to hit the White this weekend for the caddis hatch but just gotta see if they r gonna start generating heavy or stick with the lower flows. Members FlyfishinOK Posted March 28, 2012 Members Posted March 28, 2012 I read the post again...It was JC heading down there...sorry for the confusion. FYI; I'm going to post up a report in the Broken Bow section about our trip to the UMF last weekend.
