Members Leitsout Posted December 21, 2005 Members Posted December 21, 2005 I was wondering if anyone in the forum may know of a good magazine I could subscribe to for trout/smallmouth fly fishing, or fishing in general. I am looking for something with tips, techniques, patterns and stories. I was thinking about American Angler if anyone has read that, let me know how you liked it. I'd also like to say that I enjoy reading the forum for the fishing reports and tips to use when I visit Taneycomo from Troy, MO. Keep up the good work.
Members fish hunter Posted December 21, 2005 Members Posted December 21, 2005 Fly Fisherman is pretty good. Usually has good info on all the attributes you speak of. The cover photos have been nice lately also!! Check it out b/f you subscribe. American Angler is good as well.
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 While I have spent decades reading magazines, I believe in todays cyber world there is much more pertinent information on the net, at least for our area. The archives here are an endless source of information. Ozark Anglers Other forums; Fly fish Ark-MO Ozark Chronicles Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Steve Smith Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Midwest Flyfishing magazine is the only one I buy. Covers Arkansas to Michigan. http://www.mwfly.com/contents.html ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO
motroutbum Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 American Angler is a really good mag to subscribe to...especially becauase Zack Matthews writes for them also. My favorite Mag though is Oregon based. Flyfishing and Tying Journal. articles are good patterns a plenty and good tailout stories. Dave Whitlock is a contributer and has really good editorials. check it out There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!

Now I have narrowed it down to two that are consistently interesting and have useable "stuff". They are: Midwest Flyfishing Magazine & Flyfishing and Tying Journal. Both offer articles that help me escape and some of the most fish-catching patterns for me to tie and use. Members Oldschoolcane Posted December 23, 2005 Members Posted December 23, 2005 I agree with loo10, have been a subscriber to them all. For me American Angler used to be a good read but I've discontinued that also. Just got to the point that it wasn't relevant anymore. Still subscribe to Fly Tyer, but its kind of gone down hill also. So, that may go also. Most of these publications change from an overly commercial publication to more of a editorial focused magazine, then they return to the advertising focused publication. After awhile I just get tired of getting issues and just throwing them away. Tim
loo10 Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 So true. Most magazines have some good issues and then some that you wonder if anyone really proof-read them. They're just filled with worthless gunk. Like journeyman said, Flytyer used to be awesome but seems lately it's just got wierd stuff in it that just doesn't apply to me. One that used to be great and they quit printing it was Warmwater Flyfishing. I loved it. Then they just discontinued it. Without the advertising clout of the trout fishing behind it, I guess it just couldn't keep up; but i picked up some almost magical bass & bluegill patterns in it over the years. Greg Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 I like them all to some degree but my favorite is American Angler. I also really like the freebie: Fly Fish America. It has a ton of adds but I really like the articles about all the newest gear. Brian K. Shaffer Posted December 24, 2005 Posted December 24, 2005 I'll second what Greg just wrote.. I too like Fly Fish America. In fact, I wrote in 8 or so times and got published. Even though they were Gear Reviews.. it still counts.. my name in print in a magazine. I also loved Warmwater Fly Fishing. I still have all but 1 copy lying around. I think they only did 4. After really thinking about it, coming from a guy who has tried them all.. I would have to say I like American Angler the best, FlyFisherman second, and last but not least - Fly Rod and Reel. I subscribed to that one for like 6 years before they got way too ad happy. ( but I miss John Geriach's articles a lot now ) Check them all out at the grocery store before deciding. Thats what I do. tight lines - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
