sandbc Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Hooray! I finally got a saturday off and spent the day crappie fishing with my buddy at CC area. Man what a beautiful day. Overcast and just a slight breeze. If only the fish would have been biting. Thought it was going to be a killer day when I caught a fish on each of my first two casts but that soon came to an end. As we moved around it seemed we could only pick up one crappie at each stop and not always a keeper. Needless to say it was a slow day but it was still such a nice day. We did end up with 11 keepers and 1 eye between us. Some on minnows some on jigs of no particular color. Most fish were caught in 4 to 10 fow and the bite was very tender. Most of the crappie still had firm eggs. Thats about all the info I can give. Hope to see some of you there. Keep up the good reporting and stay safe.

sandbc Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 I think the spawn is a scattered as the fish this year. With the early warm weather that set some of them off as the water warmed but then the rains and cool nights came and backed some off. With that being said I truley believe that even though the warm water told them to spawn their biological clock was telling them is was'nt time yet so now some have some have'nt some will and some won't just like the years when we get the big spring rains just before the spawn and the lake levels go way up and screw everything up. In short you just have to be in the right spot at the right time to cash in. The only time I have hit the spawn right on on Stockton was two years ago when I was recovering from a heart attack. Best vacation I ever had. Turkey hunted every morning and crappie fished every afternoon. Good luck.
Members ibdgolfman Posted May 1, 2012 Members Posted May 1, 2012 Yeah just can't seem to get on them this year. The few I caught last week had firm eggs as well. Keep thinking I'll catch more than a handful but guess I'm just getting straglers. I think your are right sandbc the weather has them not knowing weather they are coming or going. Kind of how I feel. On a positive note I have caught more eyes this year than I've caught total in the past. Just blind luck while trying to catch crappie. Need to learn how to catch them they are as good as cappie. Untill Saturday I didn't even catch any shorts, everything I did have was around 11 or bigger. Strange year I thought it was going to be great. Maybe they will hit it hard the next couple weeks. I've caught a lot of spawning crappie in May in past years. Good luck and keep wetting your line we'll get on them eventually.
