Members iflyfish70 Posted April 30, 2012 Members Posted April 30, 2012 I noticed the water has been down the last few days and wondered if anyone has made it to the river. Any reports? "bonafied fish slayer"
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I haven't been down there myself and none of my crew has made the trip. Haven't heard any reports from the other regulars either. Striper season has been a little sketchy this year...bet we had a good spawn though. Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Members TheTugistheDrug Posted May 13, 2012 Members Posted May 13, 2012 Anyone on here fly fish for carp? I have never attempted but would think it could be a blast and that the Arkansas River would be a good place to go.
OKFlyFisher44 Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Chasing carp on the fly is a blast. Only issue I see with the Arkansas is visibility as carp fishing is usually a sight fishing affair. All the carp fishing I have done has been on small clear creeks where u can spot and stalk them with an upstream approach. They r hard to beat on a 7wt as u will normally get to see ur backing with each hookup. Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Members iflyfish70 Posted May 17, 2012 Author Members Posted May 17, 2012 I fish alot of carp in the summer on Tenkiller , lots of fun and a real challange . I agree that water clarity is a big issue as carp will seldom move-to or chase their prey far from where they are tailing . On tenkiller I use a black krystal wooley bugger and leading the fish by a few feet I cast past the fish and retrieve untill in front of the fish. From there I'll let the fly drop to the bottom and wait for the tailing carp to swim close to where the fly fell. Start a very slow, steady, crawling retrieve at this point and if you feel any pressure on the line lift your rod . If you hooked up then hang on if not then try again . "bonafied fish slayer"
Members FlyfishinOK Posted May 30, 2012 Members Posted May 30, 2012 There is a place on the west bank about 1/4 mile below the 44 bridge that is good for carp fishing. There are rock shelfs and boulders all around pools that hold a lot of carp. It's easy to spot and stalk them from the higher vantage point. I found it while yakin one day last summer and had a ball.

Where on tenkiller do you fish? Are you using a boat? I live in tahlequah and have been looking for new places to chase carp.

When the carp are in the shallows they are thick in these areas. Just wade around slowly and quietly and watch for fish. I usually find them in late June through august. "bonafied fish slayer"
