Members sixstring531 Posted June 11, 2012 Members Posted June 11, 2012 My dad and I went out for a full day of bass fishing. Reports were bass were slow -- they were right. After having a few 60-70+ bass days, a full day with about 25 seems pretty slow. We caught a lot more smallmouth this time, with the largest going 3lb14oz (big smally in my book!) We released the big brownback but did manage to keep 5 largemouth for a nice Sunday lunch. I think we only got one on a spook in the morning, with everything else coming on watermelon red Chompers brand senkos as well as BPS sticko (6 inch) and wmelon red shaky head (Zoom trickworm) rigs. On a side note - I highly recommend the Bass Pro Stick-O. They don't last as long as name brands, but they give you 2x more in a pack and the fish love em just the same. In fact, as soon as I switched from the 5inch Chompers brand to the 6inch Stick-O, I started catching more fish. It could have been the fishing picking up after three, but I'd like to think the larger Stick-O had something to do with it. I've included a pick of the smallmouth. (and my dad)
buzzbaitr Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Wow, that's a beauty smallie! Sounds like a pretty good day to me. Great report, were you catching anything in the coves or was it all main lake points?

Walcrabass Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Sixstring531, The Sticko's are a good bait. I fish them on Stand Up Jig Heads with weed guards. Also on Skirted Stand Up Jig Heads. I feel like I get a better presentation than with a weighted "Fluke" hook or a Texas Rig. Sometimes I even shorten them to make a shorter "Trailer" for my Jigs. One other note, I DO NOT USE FOOTBALL HEADS. They hang up way too much. If you are interested in the heads I use P.M. me and I will see if I am computor smart enough to answer.
Members sixstring531 Posted June 14, 2012 Author Members Posted June 14, 2012 Thanks for the info. I actually fish any Senko/Stick-O type bait on a circle worm hook and a split shot. It looks more like a poor man's carolina rig except I put the split shot 9-12" above the bait. I use a football head (with little cork screw) for shaky head/trick worms, and honestly, I don't really get hung up any more or less than with my other bottom rigs.
kwall Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Nice bass , thanks for throw'in it back , now someone else can enjoy the fight too
Walcrabass Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Nice bass , thanks for throw'in it back , now someone else can enjoy the fight too You must have the "Magic Touch". Myself and my friends have a terrible time fishing Football Heads in Jagged Rock or Brush Piles. That and the fact that I lost an 8 and a 9 pounder a few years ago because of the hooks on those Jigs straightening out is why I use the tapered nose Stand Up Jigs now. Do you have a way of rigging the circle hooks weedless? I can't imagine running one of them exposed through a good log or brushpile. We used to fish 6" Purple worms with the split shot rig as far back as 40 years ago. Just jiggle the rod tip and the tiny splt shot will make the worm dance. Great way to catch them in 6 foot or less of water.
kwall Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 No magic here, I'm an eye fisher and catch a few nice brown bass by accident from time to time , they sure put up a good fight
