A few buddies and I are planning a 2 day float mid-October. Love the smallies and have heard good things about the Black. None of us have ever been on it though. Would appreciate any inside info on the best stretch of water for a 2 day float with a good campground in between with good fishing.

If it's a typical October, about your only choice on the upper river is from Lesterville to K Highway, or if you like to cover a lot of territory Lesterville to the last access above Clearwater Lake. If going Lesterville to K, the developed campgrounds are not exactly in the right places to use one for overnight in the middle of the float, but if you want to camp on a gravel bar your choices are unlimited, since upper Black is almost all one big gravel bar that just shifts from one side of the river to the other.

If you need to rent canoes or use a shuttle service, that's about your only choice. But the lower river, below the lake, can be pretty sweet if you can do it yourself. In my opinion, the fishing is more likely to be better on the lower river than on the upper in October. It's not all smallies and goggle-eye like the upper, but a good mixed bag of spotted bass, largemouth, a few smallmouth, various sunfish species, and even a chance at a walleye.
