jim m Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 One more point is that trout tend to swallow bait (nightcrawlers, soft plastics, and such) deep into their gullet, significantly increasing the odds of mortality. Artificial lures (and particularly flies) are most commonly hooked into the mouth, making it much safer to play and successfully release. Snobishly, -TwoSheds that was what I meant, haven't used bait for trout in almost 30yrs. the point of this post was about a truly trophy fish of a lifetime. just think about it, a pure strain of McCloud river trout born wild and raised wild in a small Missouri stream. there are people that come here from all over the U.S. for a chance to fish for them. I am not an avid trout fisherman but man what a trophy that was, and by the way the fish was hook in the side of the jaw and the hook was easily removed
lee G. Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 We are just joking about the fly fishing-bait deal. That was a amazing fish from Crane, and one of a life time from what i read!
Andrew324 Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Thanks for the story Jim. A friend of mine who grew up in Hurley said he used to catch real big-un's on worms in the 70's. Andrew Nelson Outdoor Adventures Graduate Assistant Campus Recreation Missouri State University
3wt Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Trout are supposed to be reserved for us snobs. “If our father had had his way, nobody who did not know how to fish would be allowed to disgrace a fish by catching him.” -Norman Maclean

Chief Grey Bear Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Odd?? Otters and trout, or any other fish, used to live in complete harmony before we came along and fixed everything.
