drew03cmc Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 What flies does everyone recommend I bring for C&R season at RRSP? I fish a 8'6" 5wt rod, and would you recommend fishing the portion of the park where wading is allowed? I would like to catch great #s of fish, as well as a lunker or two in a day long trip. Where would be the best place to start my search for trout right after Christmas? Please let me know! Thanks guys! Andy
Murdoc Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Try some small woolies and san jaun worms. It's about what ever you want to try will work. The big boys you might try some bunnies. ?Tim's Fly shop. What days will the park be open for C&R this fall and winter?? I've heard a couple of ways and I don't know what's going on. timsfly Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 The park will be open fri, sat, sunday and monday this year 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. You can fish just about any small nymph in the winter and do very well, as long as the water stays low and clear, I would suggest small pheasant tails, copper johns, brassies, burlaps, and zebra midges will all be effective, about any small nymph will catch fish during the winter. The woolybugger is very effective in the winter, the bigger fish really seem to like em, blue, purple, olive, black and tan are good colors to have around, I always carry a few with cones, a few with beads and sometime a woolybugger with out a bead or cone will work better. We have some good dry fly action in the winter, griffiths gnats and small adams will almost always catch you some fish on top, we have a small dark caddis that hatches most of the winter, about a #18 or # 20 matches them the best, they range from dun to black. I fish a lot of glo-balls and san juan worms in the winter and I have taken some real hogs on these patterns, I caught my biggest last winter on christmas day, she was a nice 16lb rainbow and I caught her on a san juan worm. The hatchery feeds the fish in the river once or twice a week, so a good pellet fly works well, especially on fridays Good luck holler if you need anything while you are down, I'm open on fri, sat, and sun. 10-1, yes just 3 hrs, I want to fish to. Good Luck. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
drew03cmc Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 Wow, Tim, nice fish! Any particular colors of glo balls? 7x still a necessity, or would 6x fluoro work well enough? Thanks a lot! I appreciate all the help guys... Andy
timsfly Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 6X fluorocarbon is what I use most of the time, sometimes you can get a few more fish on the 7X especially if you are using drys. I use the apricot and the oregon cheese most of the time, but the cream delight and the lt. roe work pretty well also, I put red dots on most of mine and I tie some weigted and some with no weight.
