Members living_waters Posted November 15, 2012 Members Posted November 15, 2012 Looking to tie up a few flys, what is the best streamers for the NFoW for lets say Dec and Jan? Nortrad Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 One of Kyle K.'s videos on his site has them fishing in the snow, Dec., and his client lands a big brown with a black articulated streamer. Not sure for the winter months. Yellow, olive and white seem to work in the spring. Brian and Justin would be of help on this one.
Brian Wise Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Streamer fishing is more water based than pattern based for sure. But I tend to lean toward Dungeons in White, Yellow, Natural, and Olive -- Hog Snares in White/yellow, Rust/Olive, and Tan/White -- Ice Picks in White/Yellow, Olive/Black, Rust/Olive. Obviously, streamer fishing is simply getting a fly in the face of the right fish at the right time. No real "pattern" because you are looking for a knee-jerk reaction from a large predator instead of trying to feed it. My Youtube Channel
Members living_waters Posted November 20, 2012 Author Members Posted November 20, 2012 Streamers for trout is a new uncharted territory for me. On the lower current 9 to 10 months out of the year smallies want an olive rust or brown something close to craw colors. But Oct and April, a silver chrome shiner pattern is killer. My theory is water clarity more then food, but thats me. Not sure if trout are the same on NFoW. I need some direction, getting tired of tying little bitty flies. My mother in law is staying with us for a while after a hospital stay, need to work on some big gaudy patterns to release a little frustration. lol "To him, all good things, trout as well as eternal salvation, come by grace and grace comes by art and art does not come easy." -Norman Maclean
Justin Spencer Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 White is always fun because you can usually see the fly and see the eat, that's what the streamer bite is about anyway, so that is usually the color I throw. Olive might work as good or better, but not nearly as fun. I'm with Wise in that I don't think pattern matters too much, but the other day senor saluki said he had a few follows from a fish, switched it up and got him to eat. Members living_waters Posted November 20, 2012 Author Members Posted November 20, 2012 please dont laugh out loud at my tying skills.... vise...... diet soda......... bad camera on phone.......lol I found this awhile back it is a shad daddy variation, supposedly it was used with great success on the North fork back in the 90s. I use a small shad daddy for hybrid bluegills here at home. Anyone tried one of these?
