Members Tbcmusiconline Posted December 22, 2012 Members Posted December 22, 2012 Got to WATTS area around 11:30. Made my way down to the trophey area below the stream gauge. Fished a #18 black midge under a foam indicator between 18-30 (just off the bottom) inches and caught a half dozen or so the first hour. The fishing was slow, so I switched to a white floss jig. Caught 3 or 4 in the next 30 minutes. Then I Switched to a #16 bead head pheasant tail and "the game" was on. Caught on the first cast. The fish were hitting on every cast. About the same time around 2:30pm there was an amazing hatch of small tan flies. The fish were hitting the top of the water so frequntly that it looked like it was raining at times. I caught over 50 fish in the next two hours. The fish were still hitting on almost every cast when I left at 4:30pm. What an amazing day. I am headed back tomorrow if at all possible.
JCWolfe Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 That's a great day of fishing. I'm guessing you didn't try a dry mayfly with pheasant tail dropper? For me, catching them on top is the most exciting experience there is fly fishing, even if its a small fish. Okiemountaineer
Members Coach B Posted December 22, 2012 Members Posted December 22, 2012 That's awesome fun. I had an afternoon/early evening like that a few weeks ago up by the dam. I have never fished in the area below Watts. How far below the parking lot is the stream gauge or trophy area?
JCWolfe Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 It's a good walk, go south around the bend and keep walking a few hundred yards more. You will see the cable going across the river. Then walk some more and fish. Okiemountaineer
On The Fly 6 Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 You use to be able to access that area by T&M Sand and Gravel, but now you've got to walk a ways. Great fishing spot though!
