polock Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 Since my Eleven point trip got cancelled this summer I am itching to get out. I can't wait for warm weather and I am gonna do a float in the first week of Jan. I really want to get after the trout and was wondering if a canoe would be doable since we are still lacking in rain. I am kicking around the idea of a 2 day if my winter gear is up to par. Thoughts?
LittleRedFisherman Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 I was up there fishing last week, you shouldn't have any trouble with a canoe, as long as you stay below Greer. The spring isn't putting out the water like normal, but still plenty to canoe. Right now, that is the clearest water I've ever fished, beautiful really, but hard to fish. Can still catch plenty of trout, but the smallies are really spooky. There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
polock Posted December 23, 2012 Author Posted December 23, 2012 just wondering how the trout are biting down from turners? I would really like to keep a couple for supper, I haven't had gravel bar cooked trout in a long time since I normally release. any pointers? what are they hitting on right now?
LittleRedFisherman Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Brian sloss is the resident fly fishing expert there, but i catch trout there using jigs under an indicator, as well as on spinning gear. Egg patterns work as well. If your fly fishing, Brian can fill you in the best. I've had good luck recently fishing jigs with spinning gear just jigging it back to the boat using the pop and drop technique. Good luck and give is aa report! polock Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 is there a good tackle shop close to greer? i am about out of jigs and my fly tying gear is still packed away in stroage. Are they hitting 1/32oz?
Brian Sloss Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 I sell jigs, tackle and flies at my canoe rental in Alton (8 miles south on 19 from Greer), though we are open by reservation this time of year. Give me a call at 417-778-6497 and I will meet you to get some jigs for your trip. There is not a tackle shop at Greer. There is a canoe rental, but I don't think they sell much in the way of tackle (jigs). Have not been below Turner in a while, check the report 5 days Greer to Riverton. They talk about fishing below Turner. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
