Fished Northfork is weekend

Overall had good trip,,,,,have had better.

When my son was fishing Dry Run,we notice there are alot of lamprey's this year. We removed alot but was there going to be anything done to get there numbers down? We caught some fish that had 2 attched.

I doubt anything. They have been in the White River system alot longer than the trout.

The only way to reduce their numbers would be to introduce a predator fish to the waters or to do something to prevent the eggs from hatching or the ammocetes from growing. Neither being an easy task.

They spawn in the spring and early summer when water temps reach 50 deg F. Sounds like some other familiar species... But the adults tend to die after spawning...

I guess passing out little lamprey prophylactics is not feasable...

We fished the Norfork on Saturday and found it pretty tough. I did notice a fish with a lamprey on it. I also noticed a really bad smell that could only be accociated with the turnover on the lake.

OK, John... you're probably the most perfect guy to ask this... Have you ever smelled that before on the White system anywhere?

That smell has become very common on the Fork every fall for the past few years.

It smelled bad about 3 weeks ago as well. When I was a kid, we used to go to Sardis Lake, MS. When they ran water hard there, it would always have that rotten eggs smell from debris being kicked up on the bottom of the lake. It smells just the same at Norfork right now. I have noticed that the DO has been improving the last 2-3 days on the COE charts, so maybe the cold weather is helping. I will stop by Quarry on Monday and take a look & sniff around.
