I have been fishing below beaver dam for about 3 years now. First time i went we were fishing with corn. After a while the whole corn thing just felt in a way like cheating or like fishing on a trout farm. So after awhile I moved onto fishing with spinners and spoon lures. Fishing down there this way made it seem more interesting and over time become fairly decent at catching fish and it was more enjoyable. After awhile of that I began fishing from my kayak this enabled me to get to certain areas i had never been and since then i have been fishing below spider creek in some of my favorite spots.

This brings us to three weeks ago.

Knowing someone who had flyfishing gear that was no longer being used, I asked if by chance he could hook me up with a decent fly rod and real. I was able to get my hands on a cabelas reel and a berkly graphite rod. Friend also gave me a leader and at the time what i thought was flyrod line. That evening i put both the line and leader and the rod and as soon as the weekend rolled around i was off with my fly rod and kayak (take in mind i had NEVER thrown the flyrod not even in the yard)to give this whole fly fishing deal a try.

Fishing that sunday morning was a little different it was cold and getting colder and it was also starting to rain. But i continued to head to the were the two log cabins are by the river. If anyone saw me that morning chances are they were laughing pretty hard at my attempt at casting the line. I also knew at the time my cast and placement was pure WEAKSAUCE. However I did manage to catch a small rainbow on the sowbug i was useing (refer to pic links)

Shortly after the catch and release enough was enough of getting rained on and being cold so i took it to the house for some football and brew.

Well.... yesterday I was doing quite a bit of reading on the types of flys, waders, gear ect used for flyfishing. During this resarch I cam across a great article about the types of line, tippet, leaders, and backing used and how its labeled. Knowing the spool for the line on the rell was still in the garage I went to get it to see what type i currently had on my rod.... thats when i read the embarassing words "20 lb fly fine backing" never before had i ever embarassed my own self untill yesterday. all i can say is thank god i didnt get into a conversation with someone and show them my reel

thought maybe some of you would get a kick out of this

I will continue to houn my fly fishing skills but dammit next time i will be useing real fly line lol

Now that it's out of my system....

It takes cajones to admit you tried to cast backing... not to mention the fact that you actually achieved some kind of cast and caught fish...

(BTW... first rule of C&R... Don't "lip" the trout...)

Advice? Keep trying... keep learning... practice practice practice... join a fly fishing club and/or get around guys who know what they are doing. They will be eager to share information and help you. That's one thing I have found that beats my bait casting days to heck... The commradery of fly fishermen. There is no "right or wrong"... Just... "let me show you how I do it..."

One last piece of advice.... Learn to tie you own flies... Quoting almost every fly fisherman I've been around including me..."There ain't NUTHIN' like the feeling of catching a big trout (or fish) on a fly you have tied yourself..." WAY true...

Oh... and one more thing... don't use "WalMart" bobbers on your leader... (That one is for Davy Wotton...)

That is just as funny as the time I tried a dog shock collar on to see what kind of jolt she would get when she would run rabbits. Needless to say, she kept chasing rabbits, and I was gun shy of electric fences, and collars.

Congratulation on your new addiction. One of the best one's you could have. Just don't hide your goody's from the spouse. The repercussion from that alone is not worth that. BTW...Speaking from experience. Unless of course, she has a lot of shoe's in the closet.

I concur with Terry, join a fly fishing club. Some of the best information can be gathered from there. Not to mention the friendships you will gain.

It can break their jaws, would be my guess. They are not as strong as say, a Bass.

Some fish have very strong jaws - such as bass - and there is not problem with lipping them....

Other fish - crappie, trout, and others - have a fragile mouths and jaws and lipping them and holding them like a bass can cause damage/injury.

Plus, after you've lipped several trout, you will find your thumb turning into hamburger...
