gramps50 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I was at the local sporting goods store today took a look at a Lews Speed Spin 100a. Playing with it in the store it was so smooth, compared it to a couple of other brands, it was beating them hands down. I was so impressed that I bought it and took it home. Came with 2 spools, a regular spool and one that has a rubber insert for brad which also is not as deep as a regular spool. Also wanted to try fluorocarbon line so I picked up a spool of Segar Invisx, #6 and spooled it on the brad spool. Just to try it out I put the reel on a Medium 5' 6" Ugly Stik. Put a practice plug on and went out to the yard to try it out. The plug was 1/4 oz and it's unbelievable how far it would cast. Tonight I want to put it on my 6'6'' med St Croix with an 1/8 oz lure and see how far it will cast. Not only does it cast smooth but the retrieve is smooth also. This isn't much of a test, fishing with it for a few time will tell more about it, After fishing with it a few times this one issue kept coming up. If the bail was not in the exact right place it would rub across my index finger knuckle, it would also just nick the same knuckle when reeling if you didn't hold you hand just right. Amittly I have large hands, but still have not had this issue wit any of the other spinning reels that I own regardless of size. I wrote to Lews and they responded that this was an issue with the SS100a and suggested that I move up to the SS200a after some thought I decided to take the reel back and exchange it for a SS200a. Haven't fished the SS200a yet but did spool it up and took it out to the yard and threw a practice plug with it. I think it cast as well as the SS100a. So if your looking at a SS100a you may want to put it on a rod and see if you have the same issue before purchasing. Guess I will stick with Pflueger for my Ultalight reels.
