Members Beagle_nut Posted August 30, 2013 Members Posted August 30, 2013 The wife and I fished Monday PM through Thursday AM last week and there were a decent number of fish but finding anything of decent size was tough. We pretty much only fish with jigs and our best colors were black/yellow, green/yellow and green/white. After the initial bite in the AM for the newly stocked fish we had our best luck later in the fly water around Hudson's corner, again lots of fish but no size.
Geoff Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Good to hear there are lots of fish. Im heading down next weekend. Going to try and stay out of the park most of the time and try for browns. "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
brittsnbirds Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 beagle, We found the same problem last week at the BSSP. Numbers were good but the quality of fish was horrible. I haven't fishing MSSP for a few years and found the quality to be pretty good. Have you noticed it to drop off just this year or over the last few? Was hoping that Montauk was ok and would switch my fishing location from BSSP to MSSP. Takes me another hour but if the quality of fish is there I will invest in the extra hour and $$ to make the trip. IMO I like the atmosphere of Montauk much better.
Jeff Tief Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Some good browns moved into the park in the last week or so.Got a text message from youngest that one of our friends had caught a 7 and 1/4 brown trout in the campground.
Jeff Tief Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Susie and I made a one day trip to Montauk yesterday and enjoyed a beautiful day.We had fished it prior to the big water event and saw similar results to what's being posted about BSSP-small stockers from the flooding that has occured.Still alot of small fish but did catch some 12-14" fish and got a couple shots at a nice brown in the campground area and lost a 20" bow in the river.Small #'s of fishermen and cooler weather made for a fun day albeit mosquitoes kept us busy in the shaded areas.
stlfisher Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 I fish Montauk and the current a lot and I don't think there many large fish in the trout par. There are some, but mostly they are typical stocker between 10-13 inches some smaller and a few larger. There are always plenty of fish, and IMO it us much better than the current situation at Bennett. The atmosphere is pretty good despite the crowds and the dry fly fishing can be outstanding...
