timsfly Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 Terry I gave Fowkes a big bunch of the same flies, and he doesn't share well. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
Members brianwright Posted November 9, 2013 Members Posted November 9, 2013 Yesterday was a great day except for the wind. I caught twice as many watery leaves as trout but still plenty of fish to have a good time. The stocking rate was okay but seemed to be many more babies than grownups. Black and olive wooly buggers worked well in the morning with pheasant tails in the afternoon. The bite stopped completely when the sun went behind the hills around 3:00. The fish seemed to be well educated by the afternoon so will be tougher to fool today. I didn't get his name but there was this one guy that was working his way through the pools starting at the hatchery and moving downstream. His game was to catch one fish from each pool before moving on. I think I may play that game today! Today will be more crowded as the weather is great. Many fish will have moved downstream so go to zone 2 if you want to avoid the crowds. Best to all! Brian
Forsythian Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 I fished a bit on Saturday, from 1 - 3. Started with a Griffiths gnat, and they wouldn't leave it alone. Same for blue winged olives. It sure is a good place to work on your dry fly presentation. Cenosillicaphobiac
John W Kelly Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Im here today. Its beautiful out! The fish are looking for stuff falling from the trees and hanging out at the surface.
Members brianwright Posted November 11, 2013 Members Posted November 11, 2013 Well Sunday was another great day; almost no wind and at times only one person per pool. Fish were indeed feeding at the surface all day; a few feet down starting around eleven. Wooly buggers good all day, blue winged olives and caddis also good all day, beaded pheasants and hackles worked in the afternoon. One fellow was working a white worm and another was using glo balls exclusively; both said they were doing great. Bite ended at three again. Today looks to be the last great weather day for awhile so it's time for me to go... Brian BTW on the drive out of the park yesterday we saw a rattlesnake crossing the road. Trying to warm up on the asphalt I guess but interesting that they are still moving about.
Members jasperflyfisher Posted November 11, 2013 Members Posted November 11, 2013 Biggest one I caught Friday.
Members brianwright Posted November 11, 2013 Members Posted November 11, 2013 Well it was a wonderful opening weekend for Roaring River all told. Lots of fish, some good sized, no crowds and great weather. I met some really great people too; thanks Ralph for giving me one of your homemade wonders, thanks Roger for giving me a set of Geezer Pleezers, they really helped. Thanks to Duane for all the shared knowledge. Thanks to everyone else; if I missed your name I'll be sure to get it when we meet again. Brian (and Helen)
John W Kelly Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Just out of curiosity, what would be considered a 'good' day at RR? I only landed 9, missed some takes, and had a half-dozen hookups. Nice fish jasperflyfisher!
timsfly Posted November 12, 2013 Author Posted November 12, 2013 Depends on how much you fish, lots of guys that fish a lot average as many as 8-10 an hour for just your average 12-16" Trout, I've done much better and had days when I was glad to get a couple an hour. I fished maybe 4 hrs yesterday landed 35, had a lot hooked that I never landed, and I spent a good hour of that 4 hrs working and catching a 4 lb rainbow, and a 5 lb brown. Like anything else, practice makes perfect. Everybody is different, I still know guys that fish R R several times a year and never seem to catch more than 10-15 trout per trip. If you fish exclusively dry flies, you'll usually not catch as many, but I have caught 50 or more in a day fishing blue wing olives or caddis. I know a lot of guys that fish just a few hrs a trip(mostly locals) and average 8-10 trout an hour, and sometimes they do much better. So I guess it is hard to tell you what average really is, but the more you fish the better you'll get, and the more trout you will hook up, good luck, hope this helpful for you.
