Another Attempt to Expand the Number of Conservation Commissioners

Legislation (SJR 29) has been introduced by Senator Munzlinger that proposes expanding the Missouri Conservation Commission from the current four members that serve statewide, to eight members with each representing different parts of the state. The legislation has already been assigned to the Senate Agriculture, Food Production and Outdoor Recreation Committee. Senator Munzlinger is the Committee Chair so a committee hearing can be expected in a few weeks. Other members of the committee include Senators Liblia (R-Poplar Bluff), Parson (R-Bolivar), Pearce (R-Warrensburg), Brown (R-Rolla), Holsman (D-Kansas City), and Curls (D-Kansas City).

A few reasons why NOT to expand commission?

1. Missouri's citizen-created system is the national model; 75-year plus successful track record; 49 other states openly express they would like to have Missouri's system.

2. Commissioners serve statewide, not specific districts, a key fact to ensuring top state-level priorities continue to get addressed-Commissioners not fighting for only one portion of state.

3. The current number requires all commissioners to be engaged fully and have direct/open dialog on all issues.

4. By design, citizens created the number of four. It has proven a wise decision.

If you have feelings about this proposed legislation, you should contact your State Senator and let your feelings be known.

You can find the name of your State Senator and how to contact them at http://www.senate.mo.gov/14info/SenateRoster.htm. Folks should also contact Senate leadership which includes: Senator Tom Dempsey, Senator Ron Richard, Senator Mike Kehoe, and Senator Brian Nieves.

Thanks for helping keep us informed Chief. This isn't the first time Senator Munzlinger has introduced this type of legislation.

Thanks,
Matt
