Troutnut69 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Hey guys , hoping someone can give me a little helpful info. My wife has family close to the Baxter Springs area and is planning a trip down there either this weekend or next. I'm sure you can guess what my question is...would there be any reason for me to tag along , and possibly bring a flyrod and a few white bass flies? I've never seen the river or the area so I know nothing about it but I'm willing to give it a shot if there's a decent chance to get into some fish. I see there's a low water dam at Baxter Springs and wondered if that was a probable spot or is it too far upriver? I don't want anyone's secret spot , just an idea of whether it's worth my time to even go (I don't want to spend a weekend visiting family unless I can sneak in some fishing too!! Terrible , I know...). Thanks!!
Bird Watcher Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 There could very possibly be some there after the rain last weekend. Spring River had a nice rise that could have pulled some up there. The nice thing about KS is that you can get a one day license for I think 5$.
Bird Watcher Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Also, to answer your question, it's not too far upriver. There's a nice Spring fed creek, five mile creek, that comes in down below there about 2.5 miles that I've caught so many out of I was sick of catching them and left. You have to have a boat to get to it though and it's in OK. I've seen a lot of them caught right there in the park at Baxter though.
Bird Watcher Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Sorry for so many posts, but I just realized that I've read your blog before and thought I'd tell you that the area below the park is a great carp and buffalo spot, especially if the river is low and clear enough to sight fish.
Troutnut69 Posted March 19, 2014 Author Posted March 19, 2014 Thanks for the information. I live in Kansas but wouldn't be opposed to buying a OK license , so if it works out I might just make the trip and give it a shot. I won't have a boat but as long as there is some bank fishing available I'd be happy. Thanks again...appreciate it.
Bird Watcher Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 If you buy the OK license, I would also reccomend checking out the old Moccassin Bend park. It's located at Hwy 10 bridge. Walk NE along the South side of the River for about 200 yds and you will come to a nice shoal and gravel bar. 62300-62998 E 100 Rd Miami, OK 74354 36.871319, -94.762406 Or, something a little closer to Baxter would be Bicenntenial park. There is a nice gravel shoal and riffle right there that could easily be bank fished 63766-63998 E 40 Rd Quapaw, OK 74363 36.959321, -94.721509
Members Ranger Dave Posted March 20, 2014 Members Posted March 20, 2014 Oklahoma changed their license for non-residents this year. In the past you only had 2 options; 6 day for $35 and annual for $55. Starting in 2014 you can get a 1 day non-resident for $15.

Also how deep is the main channel of the river and where is the nearest boat ramp? What time of year does this section of the river pick up? No one gripes about obese fish.
