Nighthawk Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 A fishing buddy and I fished the upper lake Thursday and caught a bunch of fish on Taneycomo sculpin flies. I got 2 over 18" a 17" and a lot of fish in the 14-15" range. I've not seen that overall size in a long time. We befriended a father and 2 sons from Illinois and gave them some flies and coached them into catching several large trout. They had never trout fished or fly fished before. Perfect day!

I am glad you caught good fish. The helping others is even better.
Members Wornica Posted July 5, 2014 Members Posted July 5, 2014 How did you fish the sculpin flies? Glad that you share your expertise with others!
Nighthawk Posted July 6, 2014 Author Posted July 6, 2014 Gary, throw the sculpin on a long leader, 4x, and let it sink to the bottom, then skip it back with short strips. 2 skips, 1 skip, 3 skips, with a slight pause in between. Watch where your line enters the water at your rod tip and set the hook at the slightest twitch. Russ
dnj21 Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 You guys ever see these? Just ordered some from a web site out west. Called a "Tanneycomo Sculpin". Curious if that is what OP is referring to.....

Yes but I tie my own. Those are pretty light. My buddy ordered a few and weren't as good as the heavier eye ones.
dnj21 Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 After handling these last night I can see as where a little more weight would be helpful. Still interested in trying them. They are lighter tan colored than I expected, was thinking they would be more Olive hued based on pictures. You throwing on a sinking line or just sinking tip? I guess it would depend if you were wading or off a boat and how much water is running......
Nighthawk Posted July 8, 2014 Author Posted July 8, 2014 I tie my own with a shorter tail to eliminate short strikes but that is indeed the same fly. I use 7/32 eyes on mine so they sink quickly and stay on the bottom. I fish it with a floating line and regular nylon leader about 9 feet long tapered to 4x flourocarbon.
Members SoMuchWater Posted August 8, 2014 Members Posted August 8, 2014 I've not used the Taneycomo Sculpin. But caught a few on pine Squirrel Sculpins. Size 6 hook in olive or my favorite natural.
