With Chirstmas festivies and family coming in soon, I've had a hankering to hit the Current river all week. Even though it was raining most of the day, I went anyways. I had about 3 to 4 hours to actually fish. This stretch of the Current, is where I go in the warm months, I have never winter fished this part of the river. I had some new hair jigs, and a few the Mitch sent me that he ties, which are awesome by they way, also had two jerkbaits rods ready, a pointer deep diver 78, and and my megabass jr that the brown trout nearly destroyed last weekend!

I'm keeping it real as I always try to do on my reports. The smallmouth didn't cooperate with me at all. I did manage to catch a few spots and one largemouth, they were all in thick cover with no current as expected. I fish what I thought would be good pockets of water for smallies, small eddy waters near fast current, slower sections of current off from the main with lots of boulders etc. In on section that was a deep hole with some eddy current, I had a good bite, and when I set the hook, it was big, but only had it for like 2 seconds. The hole looked more like a walleye hole possibly, but who knows.

All I had to take a water temp was a soil thermometer I used on the farm, I would think it would work, and it read 45 degrees. I fished with the jigs more than anything, I might should of used a jerkbait more possibly? Anyhow, my whole purpose is to broaden my horizons, and the challenge of patterning winter smallmouth in new water intriques me. I've got other places to go, I can catch smallies, but I wanna figure this area out, I know theres some big ones in there. Very well could of just had lockjaw yesterday, but i'm ready to go back already. Next time, I plan to have more time, and try for some walleye was well! I left after about 3 hours of fishing when the rains picked up again, it was a very peaceful time to be on the current, having this stretch of river to yourself is always a blessing after the summer traffic!
