Members ARHeadhunters Posted March 13, 2015 Members Posted March 13, 2015 I use the 24' Rio sink tips in either 300 or 350 on my eights. A six is great for throwing a sculpin pattern but you need an eight to pull the big 6-10" flies out of the water and get them back in. At the rates the lakes are rising with the weather forecast ahead we'll have round the clock streamer water in a week. West Fork Jason Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 I've been happy with airflo's lines. Just ordered another steamer max line, i'm going to try the new Kelly Galloup's 30' long steamer max line. http://www.airflofishing.com/airflo-fly-lines-sink_us.cfm I've been pretty happy with the old streamer max in 10 wt. with musky fishing also. http://www.WestForkJason.com
Members crkoester Posted March 29, 2015 Members Posted March 29, 2015 Yeah, try the new Airflo Streamer Max Long, really nice. Biggest problem is it is quite thin, so can be a bit tricky to handle with cold fingers. But the positive tradeoff is it sinks fast, stays down and doesn't belly in the current as badly as a thicker line. If you think an 8 weight is too much for a 300 grain line, you must have one hell of a stiff 6 weight. I throw a 300 grain SA Galloup Streamer Express Long (50' head) on my TFO BVK 8 weight and I need every bit of it. (they don't make this line anymore). I've actually thought about trying it on my 9 weight NRX instead. I throw the Airflo line (in 250 grain) on a 7 weight St Croix Bank Robber. I'm talking about really big articulated streamers... Double Deceiver, Drunk & Disorderly, any of Galloup's big patterns. 7 weight is the bottom of the barrel for this kind of big meat, in my hands. Like ARHeadhunters said, with a 6 weight you're really down to throwing small/medium stuff. Anything less than those 2 setups and you are going to start limiting the size of streamer you are able to throw. Chris
grizzly Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I agree with Chris, an 8 wt is just about a necessity for big flies. I have a 9'0 8wt Redington Red Vapen and absolutely love it
