Crappie report 04-16

We fished near hwy 12 bridge today at 3:00 for a couple hours and caught about 20 crappie. A couple of them were right at 15". We found them held up on a tree in about 18' of water and jigged them with random colors. All the fish came off the same pile. The guy that was with me wanted to catch something bigger so we headed out to the islands but never hooked up with anything. We went back to the same tree and caught a couple more before we had to leave.

Sounds like a banner day for me.

Wish I could have gotten out. My problem is that when I find them, I can't get them to bite.

Now I'm thinking, I'm just not feeling the bite good enough because I'm used to bass fishing. I'm now learning to feel for weight differences. Even more so than before from bass fishing. Crappie can grab a bait and you don't even feel it even with the line in your fingers and only 10ft from the boat. (had that happen twice recently)

Not everyone can go out and catch 20 crappie. Especially up to 15" so I'd say you have a great day on Beaver. Congrats.

Now..........

Stop doing that. LOL!! Save some for me!

That's a great day, Blueman! We should've focused more on crappie today...saw those huge arches between the first point left and the first island and kept going for those YAK sized stripers.

There were still a ton on the downscan when we left. We mostly ended up casting past the brush with 4lb test letting it sink down about 10 feet and slowly reeling over the top. When we felt the line get heavy we would turn the reel hard to see if there was a fish on it. I have some pics, but it says they are too large to upload.

Yum! I am going for a mixed bag on Sunday. Crappie are on the menu. I will have to remember to put my down imaging on board. I remember, probably the last time I caught crappie, that I went over a big brushpile/tree and then switched to DI and told the guy in the boat with me that there were some fish hanging right above the brush. Sure enough, pulled up a slab.
