Terry Beeson Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Certainly not the EASIEST fly in the world to tie... But worth the effort. Randall Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 i tie them in copper, red, green, and chartreuse. hook: standard nymph hook (i.e. mustad 9671) size 14-18 thread: rusty brown 8/0 bead: gold bead wingcase: pheasant tail fibers under clear pearl tinsel legs: tips of pheasant tail fibers pulled back thorax: peacock hearl abdomen: small or brassie sized wire in desired color tail: biots in either ginger or rusty brown if you want a little extra on it, add rubber legs in an "x" pattern under the wingcase. there have been times at meramec park that i've caught circles around bait fishermen on this fly. i've noticed it doesn't work as well outside the parks. Cute animals taste better.

Mikey Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 I was looking for some fly tying instructional videos and stumbles across a great video site. It's part of a PBS broadcasting channel out of Washington State. You've really got to be on cable or dsl to even think about watching these. They are large, full screen videos running about 15 or so minutes long. Good quality stuff, the biggest hang up is that they are downloaded to the hard drive. You can't stream them. You even have to download some small program similar to iTunes, but it looks like it's specifically for educational/PBS opriented content. I downloaded it and didn't have any problems. I think it's worth it to watch these 2 folks tie some great looking flies. The reason I post this here is that one of the episodes I downloaded and watched yesterday has a copper john pattern on it. Good lookin' fly, the guy tying it uses a different material for the wing casing. Worth checking out anyways. Here's the link Fly Tying: The Angler's Art They've got some midges, leeches, and a vise worth more than my truck! Mikey Each time I buy a new fly............ My wife gives me the same look........ I give her when she buys another purse... ..............................
brittsnbirds Posted January 28, 2007 Posted January 28, 2007 I've watched several of them. There are some good suggestions and techniques that I have started using. They sure make it look easy. I especially like the videos about using the rotary vise and the techniques they use. I wish they would continue to update the site!
