A group of us are hoping to come down next weekend for a float/camping trip. My question: Has anyone been on the river and know if it going to be floatable/fishable? I've been monitoring the USGS website for water levels and flow but I'm not real sure how it will be (having never been on the James).

We are planning on floating from Hootentown to Galena, while staying one night on the river. Are there any "good" places to camp at about the halfway point?

Any other general advice is appreciated!

I floated the river yesterday and it was right at a level of 5 feet for the middle section of the James R, which is about 2 feet above normal. It was defintely floatable, you just gotta make paddling a priority over making a perfect cast. But fishing was borderline doable yesterday. By Fri-Sat-Sun the river should be down another foot which will make it completely fishable and should be clearing up good in the next few days. You will have a very nice float, maybe not catch a whole lot because of dropping levels, but the paddling will be easy. There are several good camping locations down through that stretch which you should be able to find. land owners are generally a non issue on that stretch, just be respectable and you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck

I did that same float at the beginning of June water was up but was floatable. There are lots of places to camp and I caught lots of Google eyes.... 15 in one spot alone with 3 smallmouth in that same spot...... But it is a good two day float just watch out for trees and rapids. Great fishing befor you get to keer access so use a ned rig or a rebel crawl and you will be just fine.... Oh and btw you will see lots of gar
