Its getting to be that time of year again. The Fly Fishing Fair will be held in Mtn Home, Ar the weekend of October 2-3. 

Below are a list of the programs being provided. We will have several world class fly tyers and as always, the best vendors in the business.

 

#1 Premium Program – Pat Cohen - Streamers for Pike…including a Double Deceiver, a Manbearpig and a Slop Mop Deceiver - This class will teach streamer techniques, design discussions, articulated fly design. Proper material use and durability. This is an advanced tying class. Bring your vise and tools & thread, other materials will be provided. 10 attendees    Cost:  IFFF member, $100;  non-member $125 Location: Comfort Inn Conference Room #2    Time: Friday 8:30am   Class Limit: 10     Class offered once

#2 Premium Program – Jason Randall - Nymph Fishing; Contact Techniques - which stresses two basic goals; maintaining contact with the river bottom where the fish are and maintaining contact with your flies to improve strike detection.  It breaks down the newer European styles of nymph fishing, compares and contrasts methods of strike detection, offering alternatives to the classic 'bobber' style strike indicators and stresses the importance of presentation and the need master the tuck cast.  It’s a short PowerPoint followed by hands on instruction, with students using their own rods to learn the tuck cast and master the techniques.  This portion of the class is an on-the-water program. Fishing license required or yarn fly only.  Bring your rod/reel, waders, etc.  3- 4 hours in length.  Limit 12  Program Cost  IFFF member, $75;  non-member $100 Location:  Bass Conference Room (upstairs) at Ramada Inn    Time: Friday 8:30am    Class Limit: 12        Class offered once 

#3 Premium Program - Mike George will show you his Gold Medal winning techniques to add eyes, lines, spots, and dots to your deer hair tying repertoire. To attend the class you must be familiar with the Mike George method for stacking hair for the program to be affective.  You must provide your own tying tools including a vise that will accommodate MUSTAD 2/0 stinger hook and 1 roll if 1/2 inch (18MM) masking tape. I will furnish hooks, tying thread, and deer hair. #4 Premium Program – Lawrence Finney - Fly Tying Clinic - Working with CDC – 2 – 3 hours - The fly tying demo will enable the attendees to understand the structure of CDC what makes it float and how it can be adapted to wet flies and nymphs. Attendees will have an understanding of how to carry out the shuffle weave.  Also attendees will get a greater knowledge of how CDC and pseudo hackle can be applied to traditional Irish flies and wet flies.  Skill level: Attendees would, ideally, be able to tie a basic fly, pattern. Skills from competent to experienced.  Number of candidates would be around four, but more if assistance is available. Bring your vise,tools and thread. #5 North Fork of the White River, MO....a Beginners Guide - Brian Wise  - This freestone river to the north of this area’s tailwaters is one of the true gems of the Ozarks. Boasting the largest population of wild rainbow trout in the Ozarks along with trophy brown trout it is getting a great reputation for western style fishing, all very close to the Arkansas tailwaters.  Join guide North Fork of the White River guide Brian Wise as he walks you through access, fishing styles, rigs, fishing tips, and some general good video and photos to go along with the rest of his presentation. #6 Chad Johnson -4 Seasons on the White -This presentation will cover all 4 seasons on the White River- how, what, when & where fishing the White River. #7 Creating Flies using the HMG System – Joe Nicklo -  This program will include several demonstrations of the practical use of hot melt glue as a fly tying component and the various applications in tying fresh and salt water flies.  What’s covered: How to use hot melt glue as shell back, extended body, a wing case, eyes (both fresh and salt water applications) a complete fly/nymph and worms. #8  A Simple Approach To Rigging - John Berry - Let an experienced White River guide teach you a simple approach to rigging for trout fishing that will work in most if not all fly fishing situations. Using one leader, two knots and three spools of tippet, you will learn how to rig for fishing dries, wets, nymphs and streamers in a quick and efficient manner. This class is a must for all new fly fishers and even experienced anglers will benefit from this simple approach.   FREE    Location: Fairgrounds Seminar Room      Time: Friday 1pm     Class offered once

#9  Premium Program – Pat Cohen - Deer Hair Bass Bugs…Stacking techniques….including a Frog Legged Diver and a popper – This is an advanced class. Attendees will learn how to stack hair including making patterns, designs, bars and blends of color, then proper trimming skills and shaping the bugs, weed guards, and how to finish the fly for maximum durability. It’s strongly recommended that a Fugly Packer is purchased before taking this class. This is an advanced tying class.  Bring your vise, tools and thread, other materials will be provided. #10  Premium Program – Jason Randall - A Workshop on Wet Fly Advanced Techniques – Jason Randall - A Workshop on Wet Fly Advanced Techniques – Begins with a classroom section on presentation techniques followed by a workshop on tying two effective patterns.  Focuses not only on how, but also when and where to use this deadly technique. The second part held streamside to learn presentation and practice.  Learn alternatives to the standard downstream and across method of presentation, including the broadside drift and new tension techniques to tempt wary trout.  This portion of the class is an on-the-water program. #12 Why Is He Catching Fish and I’m Not -  Lori Sloas  How many times have you watched the guy downstream of you pull in one fish after another, while all you were doing was practicing your cast.  What’s he doing that you aren’t?  Take an hour, go to Lori’s class and learn how to catch fish!  A class for novice to early intermediate skills.  FREE    Location: Fairgrounds Seminar Room      Time:  Friday 2pm    Class offered once

#16   Youth Conclave Sat. 8:30am – 4:30pm   Wayne and Catherine Moore Youth Conclave  - Registration required Open to children under the age of 16. If your child is under the age of 10, we require that you accompany him to this activity. Fly tying and casting instruction will be at the Fairgrounds in the morning.  Lunch is provided at the fairgrounds. Children leave for Dry Run Creek after lunch. You are required to transport them. Each child must bring a hat, sun screen, and sunglasses.  Inclement weather could cause schedule to change, so that fishing would happen in the morning and tying in the afternoon. Saturday 8:30am – Begins in Fairgrounds Building C1 – moves to Dry Run Creek at 1pm.  Ends at 4:30pm.  Limit 20   FREE    Location:      Time: Saturday  8:30am     Class offered once

#19  Jason Randall  'Where Trout Are' - Identify feeding lanes and food distribution in the river to locate trout feeding lies in all types of water. #23  Steve Dally – photography program CAPTURING MEMORIES: Better Fly Fishing Photography

ALWAYS wondering why your trophy trout pictures aren’t up to par.  Learn how you can take magazine grade images with the camera you have on you all the time _ your camera phone. Steve Dally will introduce you to some basic guidelines to take your photography to new levels.

The class will focus on photography with your Android or IPhone: from settings to composing and taking photos, and the best editing apps and how to use them. The class will emphasis how to handle fish properly and minimize harm. Learn how, when and why to take better, and then less, “grip and grins”, plus more artistic styles. While we are focusing on photography no special apparatus, the same rules apply to point and shoot, DSLR and other camera formats.

#25 Jason Randall  'What Trout See' -What fish see and the way they see it impacts fly design and construction but also presentation tactics. Using the concept of search image we can better understand how trout decide what to eat. Do trout really see Ultraviolet light? #27 Jason Randall  'The Catch of your Life' -Successful fishing methods are based successful feeding methods of trout. When the target is large trout, we have to change our methods and think like a big trout. #28 George Peters - JOYS AND CHALLENGES OF DRY FLY FISHING OZARK TAILWATER - Program covers where, when, how, and with what to dry fly below local tailwaters including Taneycomo.  George describes rods, reels, lines, tippet that he has found produce topwater catches. He identifies the insects and the dry flies that best match them.
