Members moose50 Posted January 4, 2006 Members Posted January 4, 2006 guess the fish were bitin a lil last weekend here is a link to the only site i know of with mark twain info on it. weve had a bit of a warm winter so far dont know if it will last but if it does a few more weeks my but is gonna head up ther to try my luck. its been hit and miss for me at twain im no pro and mainly fish for enjoyment of it. i use live minnows and jigs when i go ans sometimes a combo of both. there is tons of standing timber, i can usually get one off of every cpl of trees when they are in em. havnt really tried the main lake for them my boat is a lil small for running all over the place. there are decent number of tournements on twain through the fishing months mostly bass i believe but there are a few crappie events on the lake as well. besides bass and crappie ive seen some monster cats taken from there as well. its a corps lake so there are no private docks and no private houses on the lake. they do have some nice camp grounds. in my opinion if you arent fishing there really isnt much to do around the twain area with the acception of 4th of july when there is a decent rodeo over at the dam area of the lake. so when i go up there it usually includes a trip to quincy illinois one of the nights. about 45 minutes away from monroe city. there is a great pizza place called tower pizza and mexican best pizza ive ever had. and there are a few other things around quincy to do after dinner. gamemasters is like a mini bass pro shops and usually i get to spend about a hour in there depending on my wife lol if your into gambling there is a casino a lil farther away but not much farther.there is also hannibal missouri home to mark twain and a buch of historicle sites thats a good 25-30 minutes back east of monroe city. i havent got up there yet this year but i figured id throw some stuff on here since phil was kind enought to give me a spot on here for a lake that is a lil closer to me. by the way there is a lake honeywell about 20-30 minutes from monroe city that missouri game and fish magazine had as one of the possible producers of a new state record bluegill. went there one time but the weather wasnt cooperating with us so we couldnt fish it. you have to either rent one of there boats and put your own trolling motor on it or paddle the boat yourself other than bank beating. hope this helps a lil, more to come when i get up there. any questions ask away i will try to answer if i can http://www.cannondam.com/fishingreport/
Members macfish Posted January 29, 2006 Members Posted January 29, 2006 macfish here. I'm new to this board but have done a lot of posting on other boards. I live in Monroe City and I'm from Quincy, Illinois originally so I have spent a lot of time in the areas Moose 50 is talking about. I don't have a boat so I haven't done a lot of fishing at Mark Twain Lake except mostly at the areas where it is really easy like at the Reregulation Dam which is located on Route A (goes East/West) between Route 61 (North/South)and Route J which goes south to Cannon Dam and on to Perry. There is another smaller lake on Route J which is pretty nice to fish called Route J Reservoir which is jointly regulated by Monroe City and the Missouri Department of Conservation and owned by the town of Monroe City. I believe they allow power boats on the lake and they have camping facilities there as well. You have to get a camping permit at city hall in Monroe City. I have caught some of those big catfish at Mark Twain Lake, mostly big flatheads which I have released. One 25 lber and a 35-40 lber at the rereg dam and one that was 40" but unweighed at Stoutsville boat ramp. I mainly fish for carp but also catch cats, bass, crappie, buffalo, walleye, freshwater drum (called perch here usually) and even Asian carp (silver and bighead) at the rereg dam. I pretty much fish for anything that will bite. I just like the challenge of catching. By the way, it's called Hunnewell Lake after the town of Hunnewell which is where it's located north off of Route 36, not Honeywell, but Moose probably wouldn't know that having been there only once. Hunnewell Lake also has flatheads, channel and blue catfish, nice shellcrackers (redear sunfish), crappie, sunfish, etc. I've fished there several times and caught bass, sunfish and channels but none of the others yet. Members flyingeagle Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 MTL here I come. Just checked out my boat. It's ready!! My daughter and grandkids live in Hannibal. So it's just a short drive to the lake. Clearwater in south mo. is another lake that I hit along with Wappapella (sp). My Son lives in Southern end of the State. At home I take the jet out to the rivers around home. The trout parks will soon be open. Life is good.
