Members flyfishfan781 Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 hi guys im new to this forum i need your guys help for figuring out the right type of scud pattern and color ive tied about 500 soft shells since the beginning of the year all black and a dark olive but im not sure for taneycomo what color is the best. PLEASE tell me all you guys know, i know you all fish there alot more than i do!!
Danoinark Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Just my most humble and un-scientific opinion, but tan seems to work best for me. Actually I catch more fish on trout crack than I do other scuds. The trout crack is tied with a sand color dubbing. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
shawncat Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Go to the ozark anglers homepage[scroll to the top of forum page and click on ozarkanglers.com]There's a picture of a shrimp, click it.Phil's got some good pictures of scuds[shrimp].When you get to Taney just reach down in the water and grab some gravel I'm sure you'll get a few. They look grey to me.Good luck.

I like light brown and sand color. In the summer months I add a touch of olive to the sand dubbing. I have not had much luck with the darker colors. (its ashame because a have a lot of these in my flybox) Years ago a gentleman gave a couple of scuds he called "Peppy Scuds". these were a killer color combination, but I haven't been able to duplicate by blending dubbing. They were a grey/light brown combo. If you ever run across one of these you will have to tie it on hiding behind a tree because it will excite the fish to see it. Tight Lines, Skip Perchjerker1
Danoinark Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Skip, no doubt the person that gave you that peppy scud was none other than our own Rolan Duffield, the orginator. I learned to tie it just a couple of weeks ago at Lilleys. Rolan was kind enough to give me some of that "special" dubbing and I have tied up a few. The tying instructions are on the forum here Click Peppy The source of the dubbing was their small pup. RIP Peppy. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Members ckjacks Posted February 14, 2007 Members Posted February 14, 2007 I really like olive. I had a lot of luck with it last year and so did my buddys. Personally I think you only need 3 colors: Gray, Olive, and Tan. If you have those three your good.
Members flyfishfan781 Posted February 14, 2007 Author Members Posted February 14, 2007 i have always been a big fan of black i know its not natural but it is really good at all the trout parks and when i ran out of scuds of many various colors last year and had only black and purple scuds left i used those and as surprised as i was those really worked well... in fact i believe this because i dont think more than 1% of the people who trout fish with scuds have ever thought of using black. i just tied some at home tried em and they worked.
Randall Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 i'm sorry, i just pictured a little dog running around a tying bench with bald spots on his back while the owner was chasing it with a pair of scissors. as far as the colors go, in my extremely cocky opinion, tan and gray, like the other posters mentioned are about right. size is important too. for lower water, i use 16-18, and 14 and very rarely a 12 for high water. Cute animals taste better.
Members flyfishfan781 Posted February 14, 2007 Author Members Posted February 14, 2007 well as far as size i know about that i only tie 12 and smaller the majority of what i tie is 16 i tie 12 in white because for some odd readson those work at bennett also do sculpin patterns work well at all
