tippet7 Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I am going hunting with my brother in a couple of weeks in Kansas for pheasant and chukar. Are chukar feathers useable for tying? You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
Danoinark Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Also known as French partridge. I know the flank feathers are used some on salmon flies. They are a good looking feather though. I don't know why they couldn't be used in some tying applications, especially tails. I am not sure whether they are appropriate for soft hackle. It'd be fun to see what you can do with them. A friend of mine from the Marine Corps gave me a couple of gift certificates for the hunt. Show Me Birds website You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
Mikey Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I was watching an episode of Fly Tying: The Angler's Art, he tied a soft hackle using chukar. It was called a chukar and copper. Was tied with black thread, the body was entirely of a heavy copper wire (so heavy it wasn't tied in, just wound) and chukar hackle at the head. Looked good, dunno how it fishes... mikey Each time I buy a new fly............ My wife gives me the same look........ I give her when she buys another purse... ..............................
jjtroutbum Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Sweet lookin pattern "Hello my name is JJ and I have a serious soft hackle tying and fishing habit." That said if its not to stiff of hackle. It can be used for a soft hackle. I really think that there effectiveness is more about proper (or which way the fish seem to want them) presented on any given day if you can figure out swing speed depth then hold on to your line tight. Just my very humble opinion JJ ps. maybe there needs to be a soft hackle swap Jon Joy ___________ "A jerk at one end of the line is enough." unknown author The Second Amendment was written for hunting tyrants not ducks. Danoinark Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 JJ, I am in the same club.. I probably fish soft hackles more than anything and I am lovin it!!!! There is nothing like the tug of a big fish on the swing. Its like they can't resist it and take it with more force than with other nymphs and bugs.
