Bill Butts Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 During years of extreme low water, which fortunately don't come very often, the river channel from the Dam down quite a ways was a very small stream and almost always full of trout. Has anyone experienced this recently? I haven't been down there since the lake has been drawn down so low, so I would appreciate knowing what low water opportunities currently exist. Thanks. Members Hayduke-2-O Posted January 9, 2006 Members Posted January 9, 2006 Made a quick detour yesterday on the way to Taney to check out the dam. Mostly just looked at the area 100yds below the dam on "river right" (the rogue-chuckin' stretch) and didn't see any fish in the water... that is certainly not to say that there were none, just that we didn't see them if they were in there. The water was only about 12-18'' deep... unbelievable. I wish I would have looked at more water down "stream"... if there are trout in there the change would be a welcome, albeit temporary, addition to Taney fishing.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Never forget that a MO state record brown came from down there. OK - so the guys didnt really catch it legally on pole and line.. rather with a jacket.. but still.. there are 20+lb trout down there never without a jacket - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I fished it with jigs for about an hour yesterday, but no luck. It is really low and even a White headed professional fishermen didn't catch anything while I was there. It was nice to watch him though. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Wayne - I still get a kick out of reading that.. " white headed professional fisherman " Why does that strike me as so funny ? who knows - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 It is kind of depressing when Mr. B Eagle ain't catchin' nothing. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Forsythian Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Hey guys... I've caught them off and on over the years, and here lately I've decided to try just a little more seriously... I'm thinking a key would be to fish when the water's been off and stable for several hours... now if I could just figure out the generation patterns! Cenosillicaphobiac
Forsythian Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 The trout were rising again yesterday evening. It has been tough to fish this area the last couple of weeks... it seems that Empire has a scout at the dam, and as soon as they see my truck pull up (with about an hour of daylight left) they do 1 of 2 things: (1) If generating water, wait until fisherman has waders on, then shut it off. (2) If not generating, allow fisherman to walk 1/2 mile, scout & stalk a rising fish, and as he begins to feed line- sound the horn! anyways, there are a few trout there, and I've found them to be pretty wily.
