Hay Thanks to Danoinark, Bill-Butts, Gavin & Terry, I dont want to start a tug of war, but, here goes. I am planning on spending about $150 dollars on a fly rod. I will be fishing hickory creek, capps creek, and crain creek, some trips to Tany. I also have a Heddon Pal #8406 Mark 8'3"power plus action for #8 lines, this it for heavy stuff.

I am thinking on the lines of a 4 weight small rod, but if this is wrong go with a 5 weight 8 footer. Cabelsa, Pro bass or other places. I do travel to St. Louis Mo. and Wichita Ks. because of family.

The Heddon pal # 8 weight is my keepsake, boated a 24 lb. striper, lake Murry south Carolina, on a streamer that I tyed myself, that was 15 years ago.

Well thanks to all who have advice a new-b can use, Frank aka buffaloman

I'm not sure of any fly shops close to Gore, but you have a few guys on here who have fly shops who would be more than happy to help you select the right rod for you.

There are a ton of fly rods in that price range. Like Terry says find you a shop somewhere that will let you cast a bunch and let them fit one to you.

If you like the action of your old fiberglass rods then I would suggest taking a look at the E-2 series from Dorber over in Flippin. The E-2 series are a lower modulus, more durable graphite designed to have more 'traditional' actions than the latest Super Whiz-bang wallet vacuums yet faster than your glass rods. But they have faster rods as well if that's the medicine you seek. They are 'Made in the USA' all the way if that counts in your book. The parent company has been in business for many years as a contractor who were the actual rod builder for a lot of famous names before virtually everyone started outsourcing from the Pacific Rim. They design the tapers, roll the blank and build the rod in-house. And you're always welcome to drop in and test cast rods until you find one that fits your fancy. Since there is no jobber, wholesaler or retail outlet between maker and customer they're very affordable as well. What's not to like?

Disclaimer: I am not associated with dorber.com in any fashion except as a customer who likes both their products and their business methods. CC

CC....

I've seen the Dorber website. How can an interested prospective fly stick waver get their slimy hands on one of their sticks? Do they only sell online?

Thanks,

David,

Online or out the factory door. Best thing is to set aside a day to visit them in Flippin and cast the rods you're interested in. Drop Jeff an e-mail or call first to be sure they're not taking off that day to go fishing. ;) IIRC you are at Ft. Leonardwood so Flippin shouldn't be too big a stretch to get to try out the rods before plunking down the $. IIRC you said something about being transferred to Texas. Ft Hood? If so drop me a PM and maybe I can steer you to some fishing in the area. Tom

A trip to Flippin to cast Dorber rods is well worth the effort...

I will third that. Their customer service is top notch, the best in the business as far as I am concerned. You can't go wrong.
