Members drbewley Posted March 1, 2007 Members Posted March 1, 2007 I wonder how Texas will handle it. Texass?
taxidermist Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Until those carpet baggers came down after the war, the spelling was ARKANSAW, after the Kansa indians of which the other tribes were a part of. I would prefer it be Arkansaw, look at the old maps.
Members JimmyT Posted March 2, 2007 Members Posted March 2, 2007 It was a hot topic in the legislature at one time. A corruption of of the original native toung by the french and then corrupted by the speakers of english but "ARKANSAW" I like better. Jimmy T. http://flyfisharkansas.com/blog
Terry Beeson Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 What about Aux Arc? That's the true spelling of Ozark... From the Arkansas History Commission website: "How did Arkansas get its name? From the Quapaw Indians, who were called Akansea by certain other tribes. The name means "South Wind." Why is the name Arkansas pronounced and spelled as it is? The spelling comes from early French usage and the precedent set by the Arkansas Gazette. The pronunciation was determined by the General Assembly of 1881 after scholarly investigation." TIGHT LINES, YA'LL "There he stands, draped in more equipment than a telephone lineman, trying to outwit an organism with a brain no bigger than a breadcrumb, and getting licked in the process." - Paul O’Neil
