I was wondering if anyone had any good fishing reports for opening weekend. I am taking a trip to Montauck the weekend of 3/16 - 3/18 and was wondering what was working and what was not.

Hey, I'll be there that weekend too. Loop four site 423. I'll be the one with the blue F150, the Coachmen PUP with teal canvas, and a beer in both hands . Stop on by and we'll discuss it.

Reed's cabins website is a good resource. It's updated a couple of times a week. www.reedscabins.com.

yep i was down there from the opener thru saturday. the fishing was great and it was easily 75 fish days the whole time, i quit counting and it was alot of fun. I landed a 4lb on opening day it was a great day. The water is higher than years past and just a little dingy. Small jigs i tie (white/black/olive) worked great like usual. Sight fishing was decent in some areas that werent too deep. There are alot of fish in the water, and the bite was good. There was a lot of short striking tho so smaller the better.

ill be down there that weekend of the 17th too. Its the mens state tournament or whatever and i won it last year with a 5 1/2 lb rainbow. It is a lot of fun and theres quite a bit of fish put in the water. ill see ya guys prolly down there.

75 fish days the whole time

Wow, I'm thought I had a good day Saturday and was happy w/ 10-15 fish.

Saturday was a weird weather day. Cold, off and on snow. In the afternoon the fish were rising to something, I couldn't tell what they were hitting, but I think they my have been hitting the snow flakes. Did anyone else notice this,or what the fish were rising to?

I caught a couple on a #16 caddis, but nothing large. Most of the fish I caught came on a y2k or a black zebra midge. I tried some scuds and streamers, but no luck.

I drove down from STL on saturday morning, the roads were very slick. Many cars off the road between Cuba and Rolla. I think the snow caught MODOT off guard and they didn't salt. Very Bad conditions. The roads were slick but no one seamed to slow down until it was too late. The HWY patrol had a busy morning.

ya i wasnt using my flyrod by the way...it was just a little too crowded for that. If i would have had my flyrod the count would have been much lower for sure. ill give it a few weeks before i break it out when the crowds settle a little bit.

theres a few jigs and things in my personally tied arsenal that are absolute killers. Its all about experimenting with materials and colors etc. I found these things by mistake lol. if i see you guys down there sometime ill toss a couple your ways!

10Pointer,

Did you by chance notice if they had the shower houses open? Probably not with 75 trouts on! My wifey is going and she is not one to go more than 24 hours without a shower. Believe me, I can go without!

Anyway, I'm pretty pumped about getting down there. It's definitely my favorite place in MO to go!

See you guys there!

I would agree with 10pointer on the small jigs of various colors. I would add that light line, 2lb, was also helpful as the water was pretty clear. We fished the first two days and did well but not 75 a day. 10p you be the trout master.
