ah - HA !

This is from the wikipedia website:

"In Pennsylvania, 'barbecue' refers to various sweet and mild concoctions in the tradition of Pennsylvania Dutch (German) cooking techniques. Esepcially in central PA, 'barbecue' is generally a mixture of browned ground beef (or in some cases shredded beef roast) with mixtures of ketchup, mustard, molasses/brown sugar, white sugar, salt, pepper, pickle relish and/or vinegar. This 'barbecue' is much more reminiscent of what most of America refers to as 'sloppy joes' than other traditional definitions of barbecue, which involve slow cooking of meat over wood or charcoal fires. However, if one was to order a 'barbecue sandwich' at most any type of event in central PA, you will be served this type of ground beef concoction, on an inexpensive white hamburger bun. This type of 'barbecue' is also often used as a topping on hotdogs."

So maybe "northern barbeque" is just a sloppy joe? That ain't barbeque... The only smoke that would ever see is the smoke comin' outta my ears if I ordered a barbeque sandwich and they brought me a sloppy joe sandwich...

Terry,

I live right in the heart of PA Dutch territory.

If you find yourself in central PA and go into a restaurant where ribs, pulled pork, and other smoked meats are on the menu and you order a barbeque sandwich you will not get what is described in Wikipedia.

However, if you are at a church street fair, or a Little League concession stand, and the hand drawn sign says "beef barbeque sandwich", the sloppy joe type sandwich is what you will get. And you can also get it on your hot dog.

So are there any good pizza joints near Cotter?

A friend of mine was just digging into a beef brisket at KT'S recently when the owner, MoMo, came over and suggested that, since he noticed my friend using a knife to cut the beef, it wasn't tender enough and replaced the meal. I normally don't order beef, its stringy a lot of the times but MoMo has restored my appetite and confidence in ordering beef, at least at his restaurant. Overeating is one sport that I excel at and can't afford to make many mistakes.

Patricks

P.S. You might also try the rib tips at Al B's in Lakeview. He does a little trick with sugar prior to smoking. You also get a man sized portion, an overeaters dream.

The best pizza that I have had in the area is at the House of Pizza in Mountain Home near Walmart. They make their own crust. and have some tasty pasta dishes. Oh yeah, they also dispense adult beverages.

Salmo,

I'm wondering if ordering barbeque in central PA is anything like ordering a Philly Cheesesteak in Arkansas?...

There use to be a pizza and beer joint in Morrilton, AR called The Blue Bonnett. Cold beer and hot pizza. The pizza was the best I've ever had. Especially if you ordered it with the smoked Petit Jean Italian sausage on it.

A friend of mine was waiting tables there one night and a guy came in with his wife/girlfriend. This guy had tattoos, long hair, a long beard, and sunglasses. He was quite the oddity in this place to the locals. Pam thought she recognized him and sure enough found out it was the bass player for "that li'l ol' band from Texas" Dusty Hill (Z Z Top... Just in case Jimmy T reads this and wonders who I'm talkin' about... ) Seems the band had stopped in there years before and Dusty remembered how cold the beer was and how great the pizza was. He was on his way (driving) from Florida to Houston and when they got to Jackson, MS, Dusty got a "cravin'" for a Blue Bonnett pizza... So... they made a 500 mile detour to get one.

I wouldn't be surprised to find an Arkansas Philly Cheesesteak an improvement over the "authentic" Philly version. Cheese Wiz is not high on my list of favorite ingredients.

It won't be long now. I will arrive in Arkansas Tuesday morning. Thank you to everyone for their advice. I am really looking forward to this trip.
