Members outdoorarki Posted March 11, 2007 Members Posted March 11, 2007 Here are a couple of rods I just finished. They are 8'6 5wt on forcast blanks. One has holo stripping guids and tips and the other has blue strippeingguides and tip.
Danoinark Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 Welcome to the forum. Those are very nice. It appears you designed the cork. I sure like the configuration of the handle. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Members outdoorarki Posted March 11, 2007 Author Members Posted March 11, 2007 Yea I turned the handles on these rods. The cork was a cheaper grade of cork and had a lot of filling in the bleamishes. next time I'll go with a better grade of cork. One will be for a buddie that has a birthday this weekend and the other I'll keep. I'm gonna let him pick which one he wants. We will hit the river Thurs. to try em on some trout. Then we will hit the Sow Bug on Fri.
Greg Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Very nice work. Those forecast blanks are really nice in my opinion. I've made a couple of rods on those blanks. One was a 7 1/2 4 wt that I still really like. I was never talented or brave enough to try turning my own grips though. I bought the pre formed ones. Members armyflyfisher Posted March 14, 2007 Members Posted March 14, 2007 After I move to Texas this Summer I'm thinking of building a 7wt as an introduction to fly rod building. I've been looking at the Forecast blanks and kits from Cabela's. They have the 7wt in a 4 piece kit for like less than $90. You guys have any experience with these blanks and kits? It will be my first build. Thanks, David
Greg Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Armyflyfisher - you might try the kits/blanks from hook and hackle. I think they are less $$ than cabela's. I've found them good to deal with too. http://www.mailordercentral.com/hookhack/ Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Members armyflyfisher Posted March 15, 2007 Members Posted March 15, 2007 Thanks Greg. I'd seen that web site before but had forgotten to look for kits there. Actually Cabela's price for a 9' 7wt 4 piece kit is $88.99 and Hook and Hackle has the same length and wt rod for $106.40. The H&H kit comes with a Pacific Bay reel seat and full wells grip so that's probably where the extra cost comes in. I'll definately keep H&H in mind. I'm moving to FT Hood which is fairly close to the big Cabela's near Austin TX. David
Members outdoorarki Posted March 19, 2007 Author Members Posted March 19, 2007 I bought my blanks at hook and hackle. They had a sale on them for $12 apeice (I think). I don't know if the sale is still going. The kits are ok, but you can get better componets if you order them seprately.
Terry Beeson Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Click here and take a look at Dorber's offerings. These are sweet rods and you can go to Flippin, AR to pick it out... Members armyflyfisher Posted March 19, 2007 Members Posted March 19, 2007 Thanks Terry, BUT...Dorber doesn't offer a 7 or 8 wt. I'm heading to Texas this Summer (land of the big....er...fish!) and I was wanting a rod to handle them biguns! Plus with the Forecast blanks I can get a 4 piece - Dorbers are all 2 pc. I know, I know...I sound like a picky little dink!!! David
