What to tie for Bennett?

Bunch of great suggestions.  I love to catch trout on dries and little midges but for me at least, I find I need to break out the old sink tip line and strip something to catch fish regularly at Bennett. The crackleback in all the tried and true colors.  Chartreuse works well sometimes and so does copper or orange.  griffiths gnat stripped on the sink tip.  Can never go wrong with a brown woolly. One of the best days I ever had during catch and release was with a white river demon (bugger variation). Here's a link: http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/wr_demon.htm.  i use bright orange thread but I am sure red works well too.  When wet, the thread underbody kind of glows through the pearl midge braid overwrap.  looks pretty cool.  Another bugger variation I do well with on occasion is called the Oklahoma bugger (don't know why). size 10 or 12.  gold bead  Yellowish olive marabou tail.  yellowish grizzly hackle and a peacock herl body.  The flash is tied in a little differently.  take four or five strands of olive or root beer krystal flash and tie it in behind the bead on top of the body before you palmer the hackle.  then palmer the hackle up.  trim the flash even with the tail.  forms a "crackleback" of flash instead of the peacock herl.  has been deadly at times.

Thanks for the great flies. I like to use woolybuggers when fishing in CO. Your suggestions sound great and I will tie some up this week. On your buggers do you wrap any lead on them as well as the bead head for extra weight or is the bead enough? Thanks for your comments and suggestions.Does anyone have a fly type or color that is specific to Bennett I should tie. A fly that is a local that I should have in my box that you are willing to share. I understand the need to keep your secret pattern.

I tied up most all of the flies you all have suggested and will finish the rest this week. Thanks so much for all the help! It looks like a great fly box. I can't wait to try all of your flies! Last week they absolutely hammered a tricolor glow all. The small one from Larrys.

called the jimi Hendrix. I tried every midge I had a caught a few but the glow all did the best. I was fishing the island most of the time. Might have been that the fish had eggs in them and when they were cleaned the eggs were tossed in the water. A couple I cleaned had eggs. Anyway, the glow balls at Larrys are tied locally and have nice hooks and are very exposed for a great hook set.

Thanks for the color on the glow balls. I have been wanting to tie a few glow balls and San Juan worms. Sounds like I need to tie some tri color ones. Any good color on San Juan worms?

Hey guys, I see that several posts say a P&P midge is a good fly to have for Bennett. I have seen a pattern recipe using a Red or Rose color thread and one with a pale yellow thread. What is your choice for color? Do you have a thread number or color you use? Is it just like a straight zebra midge look or is some variation better for Bennett? How do you guys fish it? Thanks for the help!

any pale yellow thread will work.  i use veevus 10.  great taneycomo fly.  under an indicator or dropper off of a big dry or larger nymph.  i coat the entire fly in loon flow or sally hansens to protect the flashabou overbody

Thanks for the info. on the color. I thought the correct color was more of a pale yellow. I like your idea of using some UV coat to make the fly more durable. I have not used veevus thread but need to try it. Thanks again!

All you need to coat the fly is Sally Hansens waterproof clear nail polish. I use it on every midge I tie.
