I fished Roundhouse this morning with one generator. My brother in law is visiting and he wanted to fish close to the house. We got on the river at sunrise. The water was wadable and the trout were cooperative. Olive Woollys and partridge and green soft hackles. We caught plenty of fish. We left at 9:30 to pick up our wives and eat breakfast at the Sands. As we were leaving the river I noticed some caddis coming off. If you want to avoid the herd on the Norfork, this is a pleasant alternative.

John (or anyone else who wants to chime in),

When fishing a soft hackle in faster water like at Roundhouse, do you prefer to grease your leader and fish it in the film, or do you just fish it like a conventional nymph?

In my opinon and soft hackle experience it depends on how the fish are feeding in the water column. If they are taking emergers I would grease your leader and probably use a light wire hook. when fish are feeding deeper try not greaseing your leader or greasing it part way and use a heavier wire hook. Take a few minutes to observe before you jump in.

I fish soft hackles with the classic greased line techinque. I never fish them as nymphs.

Thanks for the tip, I've been tying my soft hackles on dry fly hooks, but they still sink slowly. I am gonna try greasing the leader this weekend at the Little Red (if I can escape mosquitoland) and give it a shot.
