Well, I fished it for the first time last week. It was tough and you had to work for them, but the fish were there and when you could actually get the fly down, they ate.

The cool thing I found as being a newbie to this river is that the fish are pretty freaking wild and they fight harder than most any other trout I've ever caught.

KAT,

That's what's great about the Eleven Point. It's not suppose to always be easy to catch fish like the amusement parks (trout parks).

Try not to spread the word too much - we like it just like it is!!

The fishing has been hit or miss lately. The water is about 1/2ft above normal which is reasonable and getting better all the time. You must get to the bottom for success. The white ribbon area was to be stocked toward the end of March, but got delayed until the first week of April, due to supply problems at Montauk. Right now I'd suggest the blue ribbon area.

Mark,

None of the wild rivers are easy to fish. I like for people to go to them, get their arses handed to them by wild trout and then head back to the trout parks for easy pickins. That's what I've done. I've got a feeling that if people think that they are going to go to these rivers and catch fish, they are mistaken. They are going to be in for a long hard day and probably get skunked.

I fished the water above hwy 19 bridge. The water was a foot high which made for some tricky wading and the fishing was tough. I have never had much success on the 11 point this time of year but I have been tying a bunch of new stone fly patterns and have be dying to get them wet. I think I fished for about three hours and caught one. The water was still very cold I didn't take a temperature but I would guess it was below 50. I would expect fishing to pick up when the water warms a bit.

KAT,

LOL, once you become accustommed to fishing the river, you will have more luck. Even when the fishing is slow, the scenery is incredible. The group I go with have been fishing the river for about 10 years and usually catch our fair share, but more that once we have had ours handed to us too. As far as heading back to the trout parks, though, NEVER!!

I like the trout parks during the winter season. It's fun, if you're man enough to stand the cold. Some pigs in there too! I went back to Taney for my redemption (pretty much right on the way home) and tore 'em up like I was fishing in the hatchery. It is really amazing how different those waters really are.
