Danoinark Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 John Berry was gracious enough to post his green butt pattern in one of Phil's articles. http://ozarkanglers.com/forums/index.php?s...p;hl=green+butt If you have never fished SH's I encourage you to do so. Actually for any new fly fishing enthusiast its a great way to get started and begin catching trout right off. At the same time you are helping preserve a long time tradition as soft hackle's, spiders and wet flies certainly predate any modern nymph of today. In the article John gave an excellent description of fishing a soft hackle on the swing. The end results are monstrous takes when the trout hits the fly. I carry more soft hackles than anything and fish them almost exclusively. You need to give it a try. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
WebFreeman Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Can you post materials? That was a nice article and a sweet fish. “Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” — Henry David Thoreau Visit my web site @ webfreeman.com for information on freelance web design.
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Would that be John's "Double Your Money Back Guaranteed" Pattern? I got one from him at the SowBug and it truly is a killer. John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
RiverRunner Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 I have to agree with Dan, soft hackles are among the most productive flies to use in this part of the world. They are easy to use and once you get used to working with partridge or hen hackle, easy to tie. For some reason, the strikes you get with a soft hackle are tremendous.
Randall Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 i gotta agree with the excitement and effectiveness of the soft hackle. i absolutely love it when they hang just below the surface and you can see the wake from the fish following then BAM! to me, the only thing that compares to that excitement is watching a trout come from the bottom to smash a hopper. oh man i love fishing. Cute animals taste better.
The Caddis Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 It doesn't get much better than fishing with soft hackles. Can someone post a pic of this famous Green Butt? How about the recipe? is it just thread and partridge?
Randall Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 i would imagine so, maybe a dubbed ball just behind the hackle and some ribbing. i'll play a little and see what i can come up with. i might even post a pic if they look like something i would eat if i was a fish. Cute animals taste better.

Randall Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 oh... this is what i tied... not quite the same, and i didn't think it looked real effective. Cute animals taste better.
Danoinark Posted April 20, 2007 Author Posted April 20, 2007 Randall, there ain't nothing wrong with that fine specimen. I would say you have quite the fish catcher there. Nice looking bug. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
