Members Pup Posted April 21, 2007 Members Posted April 21, 2007 Hi there, I live in Indianapolis, IN. Grew up some in Lawrence, KS where my Dad worked at KU. During the fall, we'd occasionally head down to Cassville to spend some time at Roaring River State Park to do a little fishing for rainbows. Tried fly fishing there, but always seemed to wind up with a spinning rod in hand and floated a few trout worms. Would very much like to get back to MO sometime to fish a few places. I like to tie jigs for bass. It seems like I do more tying than fishing anymore. Funny how that worked out. Here's a few thumbnail photos of my ties. Left-click over them for a larger view. I really like what I've seen so far of this site, especially the jig photos. Have a good day. Pup
WebFreeman Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 Cool jigs. Do you target lake or river fish w/ these? Members Pup Posted April 21, 2007 Author Members Posted April 21, 2007 I like to target river fish with those. Preferably, smallmouth bass. But, green bass are more than welcome. Jig tying is really a very rewarding hobby to me. The darter-headed jigs are those I use for a fishing method known as the float-n-fly technique. Here's a few more jigs from my cache. Thank you for the welcome. Pup
creek wader Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 I don't believe it. I've been trying to get someone to tie me a fly/jig like the first one you have pictured. The one with the craw trailer. Basically what I was wanting is a scaled down version of the Gary Yamanmato Double tailed hula grub. Something that had a smaller hook, that I could catch not only smallies but, google-eye, and larger sunfish. Bitsy jigs have too large of a hook. I had several trout fisherman tie me some versions but, they were flies for fly rods, (I also use one), but what I was wanting one for an ultra light spinning rod. I finally bought a tying kit and after numerous attempts. I wound up with several that are pretty lame. So, I bought some skirts online, and trimmed them up, added them to 1/32, 1/16, and 1/8 oz. jig heads, then added twin tailed trailers. Unfortunatly, the trailers are still larger than what I want. Although, the first time out, I caught a 15" largemouth, and two 12" smallies. How big are you craw trailers? Where did you get them? Crappie critters are the size of trailers that I want. They'd be perfect but, they don't come in the right colors. If you are interested in selling a few of those in a 1 1/2" or 2" . 1/32 oz., 1/16 oz. ,or 1/8 oz. size I'd be interested. Sorry to ramble.... creek wader wader
Terry Beeson Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Welcome to the forum, Pup... Creek Wader... Did you tell the fly tiers you wanted jig heads? Most of us can tie on a jig head with no problem. There are a couple of guys I know who tie only jigs... Don't give up... keep tying and your flies... I mean jigs... will look better with time and practice. You might want to get some tiers to give you some pointers... And who cares if they LOOK lame as long as the fish eat 'em... A lot of my flies that look lame catch the most fish... creek wader Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Terry, thanks for your encourgement, I think I've tied about 15 different versions of it, not counting a dozen or so with the rubber skirts. What kind of hair or material did he use on the one with the craw trailer? wader
gonefishin Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Great looking jigs. I especially like the sherbets. They just look like fish catching jigs. I would rather be fishin'. Terry Beeson Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Hmmm... you got me on that one, CW... I'm not sure what that is but could be some sort of craft fur? Steve Smith Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 It looks to me like some of the new synthetic hackle on the tyer's market right now. A lot of folks are using it for hackle on nymph patterns. It's too soft to float but makes great woolies and jigs. Nice ties Pup. ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO
