Went crappie fishin at Hazel Hill lake this morning (near warrensburg) and I decided to start up at the dam. As i crested the hill leading to the water i seen a guy fishing with 4 poles (he was fishing for catfish with huge floats and bluegills for bait). In addition to the four poles he had a fifth in his hand that he was casting a rapala with! He had his poles about 15 yards apart so he had a total of about 75 yards or more of the water to himself. I grimaced, but bit my tongue and started walking down the dam from him when he scrambled down towards where i was heading so he could get there ahead of me and start casting where i planned on fishing. Un-freakin believable. I simply walked even farther down and started fishing (outfished him 7 to 1-serves him right). Nearly 2 hours later he left and wished me a good day. When I did not respond he walked off and grumbled about how unfriendly I was. Maybe unfriendly pal, but legal. Rest assured the next time i write down your lic number and give it to our friendly conservation officer. Okay guys, I'm done venting now. Guess this sort of thing doesn't just happen in our trout parks huh?

OK. So the "illegal" part was "bluegills for bait?" I haven't bait fished in MO since I was a kid. So please refresh my memory. Because, if the fella was there by himself and decided to fish the way you described, it wouldn't bother me at all. I'm a big fan of "first come first served" when it comes to that sort of thing. Now, racing you to your intended spot was a bit over-the-top. I'll grant you that, given the 7 poles in the water across 75 yards of bank stuff. But I don't have a problem with bait fishermen using several rods at once so long as they don't bully people who were there first into giving ground.

If his poles were not labeled clearly with his name and full address, then it was illegal. It was DEFINITELY bad manners!

As for that happening at the trout parks...well, opening day was chaotic, and a lot of nerves were stepped on! I understand many lines were cut, crossed, tangled, and fish lost...which stinks for the fish lost with hooks still in them!

As we've seen on this forum, we all take a slightly different view of fishing. Some are strictly fly fisherman, others will fish any way for anything, and others just like to dunk worms and minnows for fun. There are some who fish for sport, and advocate only catch-and-release, and others who fish for food, and still others who fish for fun and sometimes keep 'em, sometimes don't. I would hope that all of us would see that we need to share the fish, the water, and respect for each other and nature. If not, well, remind me not to fish with that person! :)

I can bring home the trout...fry it up in a pan...and never let you forget I caught it! 'Cause I'm a woman!

7 poles in 75 yards huh, I bet ive told you a million times not to exagerate. How fast was that 75 yard dash.I know with my fishing luck the pole with the fish on it would be the seventh and I would wear my self out running all day long

Mrs Ducky has it right, a maximum of 3 unlabeled poles is all that is allowed. So first come first served was not the issue.. Being an ignorant ingrate was.

OK. Now I understand. I did not know that law because I do not bait fish and have not learned how to work more than one fly rod at a time.

But I am kind of puzzled by how one manages a spread of rods across 75 yards. If you assume the bloke stands in the middle at all times, that's still over 30 yards each way to get to the end poles IF you see a nibble. I used to have trouble keeping an eye on TWO that were pretty much within arm's reach. LOL

Actually, he was at the far end of his poles, so he would have a pretty good jaunt (over rip rap no less) to get to his last rod. If that were me, I'm sure murphy's law would have struck with a vengeance and the results would probably result in a kodak moment (I provide enough of those already)

How does one take care of seven poles? If I have two out it to many.

As for being labeled guess he could have had his name written on them. I know a rod company in Harrison does that with a gold pen then puts epoxy over it.

I guess this guy is a "converted" crappie fisherman and was using - instead of a spider rig - a tarantula rig...

"Ignorant ingrate?" I think you're being too kind there, TF... I've used multiple rigs myself but found four to be too many if any distance apart. This guy should have a regulations book sent to his home.......
