trout fanatic Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Finally got to Bennet Springs today and aside from a miscalculation on my part had a great day. Had 3 fish on a stringer when my biggest fish of the day (14 inches-not exactly a behemoth but still a nice fish) hit. After landing him, I tried to release him so I could continue to fish but he simply would not revive so I added him to my stringer and ended my day. All in all a great day, 11 fish in 2 hours is something I can live with. The river is still up 6 to 8 inches and murky with considerable flow-just perfect. Fish hit on zebra midges (black and red seemed to be the best colors)and a caddis larva pattern. Goin back thursday to try again.
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Thanks for the report. I'm thinking of heading over this weekend. Not sure if we'll go to Taney, Roaring River, or Bennett Spring, but we know we want to go somewhere. Let us know how the fishing is on Thursday. John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
troutchaser Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Good to hear you were catching fish. I heard fishing was hard right now, since the water was high, fast and murky. How deep did you have to go with the zebras? Paul Rone
trout fanatic Posted April 25, 2007 Author Posted April 25, 2007 I varied the depth from 18 to 24 inches depending on the water I was fishing. This was my first time down there this year and I thought the fishing was pretty good (not near as many dinks as usual) although wading was a different matter. I sometimes found myself without enough room and as a result caught two tree trout. Crowds were way down and I suspect that it being april as well as turkey season resulted in fewer people (there was only one other angler in my view and he seemed pretty content where he was at so I had a big stretch of water to play with. Hope that holds true for thursday as well
Murdoc Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 I was up this last weekend. The river was up about a foot and stained. You couldn't see the fish at all. The Sanjaun worm was the ticket for us. You could catch a 100 fish in no time if you used a light colored worm. The fish were gut hunting very quickly. They need cleaning stations bad!! After they started cleaning fish the trout had only one thing on their minds. "GUTS" I caught a lot of fish but not a lot of size. I did have fun like always! Smiles are free http://rdpflyrods.com/
