Members tclubbs2
Hi everyone. I have been a member of this forum for a while now and have gotten lots of good info on here and was hoping to get some help with an issue. I have a friend of mine that was injurred in a serious accident in February. Unfortunately he is now considered a quadriplegic. Lucklily he is able to move his arms and wrists but not his fingers. He is due to finally be released from the hospital at the end of the month and come back to the area. I spoke to him yesterday and he was telling me how he wanted to get back to fishing (a big hobby of his). He said he did not know how he was going to do that though. Does anyone out there know of anything that I could get him as a coming home present that would help him accomplish this? I was thinking along the lines of a special rod and reel or some type of contraption that he would be able to strap to his wrists. Any help or ideas would greatly be appreciated. Rusty
Sorry to here about your friends unfortunate accident. Sounds as those he is ready to move forward. Great for him. I do not know of anything that is on the market for such situations, but you might try velcro to secure the rod handle to his wrist. Make sure the rod handle is long enough to accommodate this. What about the braces they use when you break your fingers to keep them from bending. You can bend them for use. If he has motion to move his arms, can he maybe cast a fly rod? This might be to soon, but would be a great exercise for mobility. Sorry I wasn't able to be more helpful, but I hope this helps.
Danoinark
There is a device used to help new fly fishers to lock there wrist and to use arm motion when learning to cast. I don't see why it wouldn't help someone to at least keep a rod steady to the wrist while casting any rod. I think its called a Joan Wulff wrist loc. MrsDucky
How about that Rocket Launcher, or whatever it's called? Where you pump it up and shoot out the bait in the little ball? I have no idea how it works, but I would imagine it might be easier to handle because you wouldn't have to worry about casting the whole rod. When we took John's mom last summer, casting was her biggest difficulty (she has arthritis pretty severely.) She could use her palm to reel it in, but just couldn't handle the rod to cast out. The wrist band looks like the ones the cancer charities sell. Maybe those would work, too? I can bring home the trout...fry it up in a pan...and never let you forget I caught it! 'Cause I'm a woman!
