Greg Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Last week on impulse I bought a SA GPX dry tip line for my favorite 5 wt. I have to say it is the best line I've ever tried and may even be worth the $60 price tag. In the past I've been on record as saying that I didn't think the premium lines were worth the premium price. And I'm still not sure they are worth 3X what a BPS CV2 costs. But this line is definitely better. Super smooth casting, seems to load my favorite 5wt a little better and the best thing is the tip floats super high. It floats high enough that mending line seems much easier. Time will tell if the tip continues to float. Hopefully it will. Has anyone else tried one of these? motroutbum Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Yeah I used to fish the SA GPX. Then I saw the light and went to Rio. THe SA lines and the Rio lines are deffinitely the best on the market. for shootability and mendability. over all control is just better in general also. I know that some of you will probably chime in about the triangle taper and orvis wonderline, dont get me wrong the triangle taper has its own niche, but wonderline is not "wonder"line. that crap sucks. There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
Guest flyfishBDS Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 Greg I think I remember that thread lol Hey we can all learn something new at times, I discovered that on tippet rings thread. Glad you liek that line, Im the same as motroutbum, I loved it until I switched to RIo. But I'd still pay to use either of them. I don't like the "wonder" line either, but TTs are fun on certain rods and applications. Cheers
Greg Posted June 15, 2007 Author Posted June 15, 2007 Yep you were definitely right and I was wrong Steve. Although I still think that CV2 is a good line at at great price the top of the line SA is definitely better. I had it on my list of things to do this summer to make a trip to the beaver dam store. Sorry you are moving on. But I'll try to look you up in Cotter. I hope you stay on this board. I enjoy your posts. Members ozarkriverrat Posted June 15, 2007 Members Posted June 15, 2007 Being a former employee at a fly shop not to be mentioned i have conducted some tests to see if the expensive fly lines were realy worth the price. I did float tests on then and the SA and RIO fly lines were the highest floating. The Rio fly line floated the longest. In my opinion the "high end" fly line is well worth it. It lasts much longer and casts smoother. Thats my 2 cents ill get down now.
Lshack2 Posted June 16, 2007 Posted June 16, 2007 Does anyone have any experience or recomendations for a 5wt or 6wt sink-tip lines? I do a bit of white bass fishing in the spring when they move up the White from Beaver and some smallmouth fishing on the Kings. I am generally throwing clousers or crazycraws.... Greg Posted June 16, 2007 Author Posted June 16, 2007 Larry I'm looking for a good 5 wt sink tip also. I can tell you that in my experience the cortland 333 5 wt sinktip doesn't cast well for me at all. My favorite 5 wt rod will handle both small dries and fairly large weighted streamers and indicator bead head nymph rigs but it just doesn't cast this line well at all. But this was my first experience with a sink tip line. Maybe they are all kind of difficult to cast? drew03cmc Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Last I knew, they had to be cast with a much more open loop and SLOW down! The tip is A LOT heaview than the floating line, so you have to make adjustments to compensate for that. The 333 should cast just fine if you take the time to learn to cast it well. Andy
Greg Posted June 18, 2007 Author Posted June 18, 2007 Thanks for the advice. I need to try it again with a little more patience I think. Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
