Can anyone help me out here. I've been trying to find a pic of a Rusty Dunn and how to tie one. Is this another one of Leonard's secrets?

I don't know if a rusty dun is a fly... It is a color used by thread and feather manufacturers. Maybe it's just a rusty dun thread, rusty dun hackle... Where did you hear/read the name?

Old Stumbler asked me about it. I know it's a color, I have thread and things that color. I told him I'd do a web search and see what I could find, but nothing came up. Guess I could make something up and tell him it's a rusty dunn. :hmmm:

The rusty dun is a Western Mayfly pattern tied in Rusty Dun (No kiddin'). The most effective pattern out west is the "Trusty Rusty". It's basically a mayfly spinner with a rust colored body. It's used after a mayfly, pmd or flav hatch. The dun is just what you might think - a rust colored dun mayfly. The most effective pattern for this is a parachute dun with a very prominent wing. It tends to present correctly and more accurately than a Dark Hendrickson.

There is also the Rusty dun zebra midge which is a copper bead and copper rib, tied with rusty dun thread.

Thank you so much for your help Jeremy. My husband did tell me later that it was a midge and the pics help. I see that the thread color is a rust color not the thread color that's called Rusty Dunn. I've tied him up about a dozen. :woohehe: I'm now tying up some really pretty mohair leaches that have two different colors. :goodmood:
