Members Davidmac Posted June 14, 2007 Members Posted June 14, 2007 Hello Everyone!!! I just stumbled across this site, and am amazed with all of the fly fishing info I have googled, that I have not found you guys before now! I am a fairly recent transplant to Little Rock (since last January), born and raised in East Texas (Longview), but have lived the past few years in St. Louis, MO. A friend of mine took me on my first fly-fishing experience last summer, and I have been faithfully addicted ever since. His Father-In-Law owns a plot of land on the river in Pangburn, just down from the boat ramp, and on my very first outing I snagged at least 15 good-sized rainbows. I'm wondering if there is anybody out there that would be interested in sharing some knowledge about other areas of the Little Red. It's my main river of choice as my In-Laws live in Searcy, and you know what that spells... FREE BABY SITTING!!!! My wife gets the day off, I get to fish, and the In-Laws get to see the Grand Kids... Life is good... Anyway, if there are any other wade fishing folks out there, drop me a response. I usually only get out on the weekends, but try to hit the river early so I can spend most of the day in the water. Thanks for having this site!!! I look forward to talking with you all in the near future! David My first Brown... Not the biggest fish, but I am 6'6, so I have a tendency to make things look small... That's my story and I'm stickin' to it...
Terry Beeson Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 David, Welcome to the forum. You are in a great spot for fly fishing. You should hook up with David Bolin on this forum and "Maddog" Mike Davis who lives in Heber Springs. Both guys are avid fly fishermen on the Little Red. I can tell you a couple of my favorite spots. Cow Shoals is "hit and miss" for me, but when it's on, it's ON... Then there is Swinging Bridge and Libby Shoal. I fish the Norfork and BSD tailwaters more and now Taneycomo, but if I'm down that way, you can bet I'm on the LR. Now that you're hooked on fly fishing, you should hook up with the Arkansas Fly Fishers (Click here) and hone those skills. They are meeting at 6pm Monday the 18th at Whole Hog Cafe (2516 Cantrell) and you'll meet Jeff Guerin who is doing the program on the Little Missouri tailwaters a bit south of you. Good option to the Little Red at times. THEN we can get you up to Mountain Home in October for the SOC FFF Conclave where you can learn more about fly fishing in a couple of days than you can all the rest of the year. AND meet up with some GREAT fly fishing guys who know there stuff.... and you can meet me, too... Welcome to Arkansas (from an Arkie transplant on secret undercover assignment in SW Missouri) and to the fly fishing world! And again... welcome to the mad house... uh... I mean forum... Members bearcat68 Posted June 14, 2007 Members Posted June 14, 2007 Hey mac, Welcome from another newbie! I have no experience in the part of the world which you mentioned, but I can tell you that checking out the different strings on this site is interesting, educational, and sometimes really really funny...(This is for your eyes only, sometimes I fly fish for carp and bass. Trouts is scarce in KS!) Anyway I hope you enjoy this forum as much as I. Jim
Terry Beeson Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 ...(This is for your eyes only, sometimes I fly fish for carp and bass)... I SAW THAT!! .... oops.... Hey, Jim... Fly fishing for carp and bass is a lot more popular than some fly fishermen want to admit... Members Davidmac Posted June 14, 2007 Author Members Posted June 14, 2007 Thanks Terry and Jim, it's great to be here. I have tried Libby Shoal and the small shoal at the Ramsey Access, but have always graduated back to my "home spot" in Pangburn. I have never had much luck on the shoals... I keep getting the feeling that I am not fishing them correctly, as everyone else has great feedback on the fishing... Maybe it's just that they are always hit and miss, and I seem to time my visits on "miss" days... I am more then willing to learn from any "masters of the shoal" fishermen (or fisherwomen... don't want to come off as sexist)... So maybe enjoying a little first class BBQ with the Arkansas Fly Fishers would be a good start! Thanks again for your warm welcomes, and I will start getting involved as much as I can with what's going on in the forum. FYI, I plan on hitting the LR this Saturday if anyone is looking for a fishing partner... I plan on sticking with Pangburn for the time being, but the day is my oyster so you may see me anywhere... Just look for the tall guy with the St. Louis Cardinals hat on cussing at his leader and tippet tied in knots in the middle of the river! David
Thom Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 David Mac: You have received some good advice from others but let me recommend purchasing the "Home Waters" Mid South fly fihers book. It is available at Feather Craft in St. Louis. It not only lists all of the accesses on the Little Red but has a great map in the fly on the back. The first time I fished the LR I used the map and found several walk in areas and other spots that were immediately productive. There is also a list of recomnmended flies at the end of the article. The book also covers Bull shoals tailwater (white River), Norfolk tailwater, Beaver, NOrtlh Fork of the white, Spring River, as well as fly recipes and pictures in the back. One of the frequent posters to this thread, John Berry, wrote the section on Norfolk tailwater and Dry run creek. Thom Harvengt
Members Davidmac Posted June 15, 2007 Author Members Posted June 15, 2007 Thanks Thom, I actually live in Little Rock now, but I will be going on to Amazon in just a second to check out that book! Tell everyone is St. Louis I said hello, and if you know anybody in the market for a house in Kirkwood let me know!!! The market crashed on me just about the time I transferred down here, so for now the house has renters in it. Thanks again for your assistance! David
Terry Beeson Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 ...Just look for the... guy... cussing at his leader and tippet tied in knots in the middle of the river! That describes 85 percent of the guys that fly fish... including ME.... Members Davidmac Posted June 15, 2007 Author Members Posted June 15, 2007 So true, so true... I am doing a lot better since I upgraded my rod and reel... When I was first getting into fly-fishing the overall cost of the equipment was a little overwhelming... I did not want to invest $1,000,000 bucks if I was not going to like it, so along came the Shakespeare $20.00 all-in-one-fly-kit... I managed to get hooked into the sport, so I guess I can't complain about it too much, but my Sage Rod now makes me feel like a true pro!!! That, and MAN a good fly line makes a difference! David
gonefishin Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Welcome to the board Davidmac. You gotta watch some of the guys on here. They will tell tails of horrible creatures that live in Taney and such things. I think a lot of people have switched to fly fishing so they can use their buggy whips to keep the evil creatures at bay. I would rather be fishin'.
