mizzouflyfisher Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Fished Mantauk for a few hours on Sunday. Started in the small catch and release area below the hatchery. Caught several on a wd-40, nothing huge. I always like to start there to see if there are any monsters in there. Then went down to the trophy area below the park. In about 2 hrs, only managed one hookup, unless you count the 4 minnows that I caught on a wd-40. I saw very few fish. Probably the fewest fish I have ever seen in the trophy area. Did see caddis and midges hatching, but very sporadic. Went back up into the park and worked down from the spring a ways. There were a ton of fish, but not very many large fish. Caught 15 or 20, almost all on a sz 20 wd-40. The key was getting down through the deeper runs. Used a tungsten zebra midge and 2 split shot to anchor the wd-40 and set my palsa float about 4-5 ft. deep. Not how I really like to fish, but it got the job done. Also don't overlook the shallow riffles. Noticed several people that walked straight through the riffles, but I would walk to the riffles after they passed through and saw some of the nicest fish of the whole day. It was a beautiful day. By the way, when is winter going to start? It's supposed to be 65 today. I might have to head over to Bethel Park after class today. Mizzouflyfisher
