Sam Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I've never fished the tailrace below Truman Dam, it's about 100 miles from me. I've heard good things about it for years though, especially when they're running lots of water. I've heard that there's a big dock there for handicapped fishermen, and that it gives an advantage because it runs 'way out in the current. Is that right? I have a friend who loves to fish, but he's in pretty bad shape. He has to be on oxygen 100% of the time now, and he has a handicapped license plate on his car. He's also a retired, disabled U.S. Marine with a retired military ID card. Would he be allowed to fish on that dock, or is some other permit needed? Also, he wouldn't be able to fish and transport his oxygen equipment by himself. Would I be allowed to go out there to help and fish with him? I'm hoping someone here who knows can give us that information - we wouldn't want to make the long drive for nothing. Thanks.
gonefishin Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Sam: Yes, there is a handicapped dock there. It doesn't run out into the current. It does sit above the normal high water line so it is up above the water. I wouldn't advise depending on being able to use it unless you are a pretty big and rough ol boy. It has been my experience that it is generally full to capacity with non-handicapped people and they are willing to fight to stay on it, no matter if you are handicapped or not. I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Benjamin Franklin, 1759
brownieman Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Sam, gf is exactly right...it's over crowded most of the time by cat fisherman with 13 ft. long rods...I would hate for a hanicapped person to interfere with their tight lining...it is open for all to fish off of and believe me all do, lol Most of the time it is...guessing here...10 to 12 feet above the water. IMO it's a handicapped dock in more ways than one, lol...you can hit the water with a cast but good luck landing a fish unless you rig up a net that will extend about 20 ft. or so. That's admirable of you to try to help out your friend...imo you would be better off thying to find a private or public lake that will accomodate him better. Where abouts are you and I will point you at something if I am aware of it or maybe someone else can tell you a good spot. Good luck...I'm sure he values your frienship and likewise. My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><
gonefishin Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 That is a problem with most of the handicapped access docks and such that I have been to. They are not really handicap access as they are open to all and a handicapped person can't usually get near them. I would rather be fishin'. slider Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 SAM IF YOU GO TO THE DAM AND THE HADICAP DOCK IS FULL, WHICH IT USUALLY IS WITH THE CAT FISHERMAN YOU MIGHT TRY FISING IN THE OLD RIVER BED JUST AS YOU COME OF THE HILL. THEY HAVE SEVERAL CRAPPIE DOCKS IN THERE. THURSDAY NIGHT THE WATER WAS HIGH ENOUGH THAT YOU HAD TO WAID WATER TO GET TO THEM. IF YOU HAVE A BOAT THERE IS A BOAT RAMP ALSO. THUSDAY THERE WERE SEVERAL BOATS IN THERE. I HAVE ONLY FISHED OFF OF THEM A FEW TIMES BUT HAVE CAUGHT SOME CRAPPIE. I DONT KNOW IF THEY CATCH ANY THING ELSE IN THER BUT I DONT SEE WHY THEY WOULDNT. IF I CAN BE ANY MORE HELP LET ME KNOW. SLIDER DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
Sam Posted July 9, 2007 Author Posted July 9, 2007 Thanks for the information, fellers. It helps to know what we'd be getting into. My friend like to drown minners, mostly - he's a minnow fisherman. I'll fish any which way and for anything, and tend mostly toward artificials - but if I'm with him I don't care how we fish. He just enjoys catching something and doesn't even care about keeping fish. We've both got boats but I don't know how well that would work for him anymore. He needs a big battery-powered oxygen generator now, not just bottles. We're in the Springfield area.
slider Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 SAM YOUR BEST BET WOULD BE ON ONE OF THE CRAPPIE DOCKS THEY WOULD BE GREAT FORE MINNERS. STOP BY THE STATION THEY HAVE THEM THERE. TELL JENNY THANKS FORE THE REPORTS. SLIDER DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
gonefishin Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 I agree with Slider. If you want to drown a minner the place to do it is from the crappie docks. I would rather be fishin'. Sam I agree with GF yo will play hell using it. You will need a whip, chair and pistol go get on it! Its sad but true they have No respect for handicapped. The crappie docks arnt real good for cat fishing but at least there is elbow room! Fish slow and easy! Borrowed this one from..........Well you know who!
