TroutBum4wt Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 What is the best line to get for stripping at Taney day/night? Floating, Shooting, weighted etc. The line is for a 9wt rig. I know this not your typical Taney outfit, but I got a good deal on the rod from a friend, and I wan't to fling flies the size of small chickens. Terry Beeson Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 A 9wt will fling some big flies for sure. For stripping, most of us use a WF floating line with some adding a sink tip or sinking leader (flourocarbon) at the end. You can cast some pretty big flies with a good 5wt rod, but 7-8wt is better for big honkin' flies. A 9wt might be a bit too much, but will work. Honestly, I've never seen the need for a sinking line in a shallow river... Sink tip or leader in deeper pools, maybe. Shooting line only if you want to really reach out and touch someone and can cast well enough to use it. For some reason, I like my fly to ride up in the water column above the bottom, so I opt for an 5 wt or 8wt rod with WFF line and standard mono tapered leader or some 20lb Amnesia with a long "tippet" of Vanish or Maxum in the 2-8 lb range depending on flies and conditions. Just seems to work for me. TroutBum4wt Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 Thanks, Terry. The information is really helpful. I'm really looking foward to this fall and the brownies. "Where There Are Trout, There's Hope" - John Gierach
flyfshn Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I am not a TC Stripper (hope to be one some day when I grow up), but all of my reels have wff line.....typically a mono leader and 2-6# flurocarbon tippet. I can't wait to fish for brownies in October either! I plan on making two trips and will sleep in my truck if I have too!! Fish On! Mike Utt “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery.
