trout fanatic Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Well with my right arm in a cast and another 6 weeks to go before it comes off, I decided to take the 4 wt to the back yard this morning for some exercise. Not too bad, distance was much better than i anticipated and as far as accuracy goes lets just say I was able to hit the lawn. It got me to thinking though of how many times I have been in situations where I wished I was left handed (but never had the guts to try a left handed cast). Guess I'll have to keep practicin. How about you guys, ever try to cast with the off hand?
troutchaser Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 I've been doing that a lot lately. I'm a new volunteer with Project Healing Waters, which works with injured and disabled veterans. One of the suggestions given to us at the last meeting was to learn to cast with our off hand to get a grasp (hahaha - getit?) on the challenges these vets will likely face. It's tricky, huh? The only thing that I've found to get things to work right is to go back to the absolute basics. Even then, it feels weird. So whadja do to yerself? Paul Rone
trout fanatic Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 Took a header at work and broke my wrist. Not surprising really, I seem to be a source of amusement to all around me when I fish (I seem to take a lot of headers-Imean full out face forward-or backward-headers). Oh well, such is the life of the gifted huh?
John Berry Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 I taught my self to cast left handed so that I could teach left handers how to cast. It is also great for cold weather. Put your right hand in a hand warmer pocket for a while. It is probably easier to learn to do this because your left hand doesn't have any bad habits (follow through, etc.). Just try it when you are practicing. It will come in handy some day! John Berry OAF CONTRIBUTOR Fly Fishing For Trout (870)435-2169 http://www.berrybrothersguides.com berrybrothers@infodash.com
timsfly Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 It comes in handy, fishing these small streams in my area, sometimes a lefthanded cast is all you got to hit those small holes in the stream, I taught myself to do that years ago. It is worth the practice, because you'll need to do it someday. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
Project Healing Waters Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Not to mention that Lefty Krey is called Lefty because he is left-handed. And we ALL want to cast just like Lefty, right? http://www.projecthealingwaters.org
troutchaser Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Not to mention that Lefty Krey is called Lefty because he is left-handed. And we ALL want to cast just like Lefty, right? Some of us already do. OK, maybe not just like him, but I am a lefty. Paul Rone
Project Healing Waters Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Some of us already do. OK, maybe not just like him, but I am a lefty. I knew there was something backwards about you. FYI, Lefty is a WW2 vet who was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge and is a HUGE supporter of Project Healing Waters. http://www.projecthealingwaters.org
Danoinark Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 I met Lefty once at one of those Bass Pro Spring Fishing Classics they do each year. My wife and I had him to ourselves for some reason. He had just walked back to the fly shop after lunch and I guess it was a slow time. One of the nicest gents you could meet. And he had us in stiches. I wish I had written down some of his sayings and jokes. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
